A devastating blaze at a St Louis lodging house for men leaves eleven dead and many injured. Among the victims is Vance Marlin, a hoisting engineer from Indianapolis, and a cut glass manufacturer.
An early morning blaze at the Empire Hotel on Olive Street, a three story lodging house with 35 to 40 occupants, killed ten men and one woman and badly burned eight. Dozens were frostbitten as temperatures plunged. many escaped by jumping or using bedcloth ropes. Fire officials and police recovered bodies including J. C. Lueders and Sarah Harris, while others were treated at City Hospital.
A large blaze devastated multiple firms including Stilwell & McGovern, W. H. Corley, T. J. Palmer, BE. B. Tate & Sons’ two stores, and the Tate block. Livery stables owned by R. E. Hudgins and M. H. Maxwell released stock and could not be recaptured. The Elberton Light Infantry lost furnishings and equipment. Atlanta was called for aid but the shifting wind saved the town.
A Brooklyn blaze at Shadbolt Manufacturing Company caused an estimated $300000 in damage with fourteen injured. The fire also damaged nearby buildings totaling about $350000. Injured included several firefighters and officials as authorities battled the flames and a marine fire corps assisted from the Brooklyn navy yard.
A northerly gale fanned a blaze that devastated Paterson New Jersey harming business district and housing. Preliminary losses around 10 million dollars impacted public buildings churches clubs offices and hundreds of homes. Firefighters from many cities battled the flames as looters were kept in check and relief efforts organized.
Fire destroyed Pier G of the Lehigh Valley Railroad in Jersey City this morning. Loss reported at $250,000 including damaged logs and shipping. An employee spotted the blaze, triggering automatic extinguishing gear as twenty five firefighters battled the flames against a strong northwest wind.
A blaze swept Pier 6 in the Morris canal basin as the steam canal boat Dale and the schooner Meteor burned. Fire tugs aided but the city department faced crossing railroad tracks to reach the scene. The Dale sank after being towed away, while the Meteor suffered near total loss and other boats were saved. About 4,000 barrels of flour valued at $3 per barrel were stored on the pier, built for over $1 million. Total losses on the wharf and shipping are estimated under $14,000, with insurance covering the Dale and Lehigh Valley assets.
Fire in Elberton Georgia nearly wiped out the business section causing about 190000 dollars in damage. The town lacks fire protection and improvised bucket brigades failed to stop the blaze in bitter 2 degree weather and high winds. The fire at one time burned unchecked before crews could gain the upper hand.
Amos Messler a Seventh Day Adventist preacher from Marion is jailed as a fugitive from justice after a family dispute over money. Israel Messler, a Nebraska buyer of land and Civil War veteran, claims Amos owes him large sums and arranged a trust over money. a missing finger led police to the preacher, and a tense conference with lawyer W A Branyan revealed a web of transactions and alimony settlements.
