A landmark conference ends with James J Hill agreeing to cut rates for wheat growers and to construct a railway serving eastern Washington farmers. The event is hailed as a unique milestone in railway history with middlemen sidelined and agriculturists allied with railroad magnates.
In Spokane, August 4, President Mellen and railheads gathered with Big Bend farmers to push diversification. Hill urged stock raising as farmers pressed for better markets and lower eastern grain rates, while Mohler discussed Harriman immigration plans and a new cross country rail link to move tonnage to Seattle.
A party headed for Colfax in the Palouse country reports that a similar conference will be held tomorrow and that they have decided not to hold a third conference at Walla Walla.
The Circuit Court dissolved an injunction that blocked the Cleveland City Council from granting public service franchises, notably those allowing a low-fare street railway company to use city streets. Washington reports a cable from the acting civil governor of the Philippines saying Clarence F. Horton supervisor of La Union died of brain fever on July 31 and William H. Badger teacher died of Asiatic cholera on August 1 at Malisqui Pangasinan. Relatives are listed as Dalmar Albany County New York for Horton and Clarkston Washington for Badger.
In Millersville a farm hand, Thomas Lemon, was found unconscious in a cornfield near a saloon after a Saturday night fight with William Maynard and Thomas Underwood. Maynard is seriously wounded. Underwood was arrested. Detectives probe a possible second confrontation at the saloon.
A Santa Fe passenger train from Redondo Beach collided with an oil train after an open switch in Los Angeles. Both engines wrecked and a coach with four oil tank cars were damaged. A fuel tank exploded, fire spread, and the Combs Refining Company plant was ignited. One freight engine crew member is reported injured.
Missing man Bowen and his body located under wreckage. Injured include H W Gardiner engineer C B Andrews fireman William Whitesides and Frank Scott brakemen. Authorities list these men among the wounded and missing in the rail incident.
London dispatch reports at The Hague that Boer leaders move toward undermining British rule in South Africa. General Lucius Mayer arrives, visits Kru ger, amid assembling Boer leaders. Dutch doubt their fundraising claim for Boer widows.
Gus Hyatt led sixteen convicts in a dynamite aided breakout from the Tennessee penitentiary at Nashville. Fifteen escaped. Ed Carney was killed. Joe Loss and James Work were captured by bloodhounds. others fled. Dynamite came from outside. Hyatt fired from inside with revolvers. Doe the Manchester train robber laid the explosives. Six escapees were government men, the rest state convicts. Posses with hounds pursued.
William Dodwell, a farmer near Yelvington, was abducted from his home at midnight, bound to a tree, and beaten with a blacksnake whip. He received over seventy five lashes and suffered many wounds. His wife and daughter tried to intervene but were stopped by the mob. The motive remains unknown.
A circus performance was held in the state prison yard at Jackson for the convicts. A ring was set up and the hour and a half show included acrobatics and a three round boxing bout between Tommy Wilson and Chan Fang. The prisoners highly enjoyed the event.
On his deathbed William Thompson of Vilas, Roca county, confessed he killed his thirteen year old son Benjamin. Zeb Nichol, jailed for the murder, is declared entirely innocent, as Nichol serves a ten to twenty year term. State Board records show the claim.
The council’s busy hour passes a batch of street railway contracts to the Committee on Contracts and Franchises after first reading by title. The action moves the documents to a detailed review stage for potential amendments and approvals.
Mayor Bookwalter asks City Council to authorize hiring additional legal counsel to represent Indianapolis in the gas company dispute and to approve an ordinance for a 100000 dollar loan to fund boulevard construction including Fall Creek and South Side roads. The session covered interurban contracts, railroads, and annexation moves for Norwood with votes on Atkins and Keach switches and transfer requests.
An ordinance introduced by West, with committee favor, approves Citizens' heating and lighting plant for the area north of Sixteenth Street between Central Avenue and the L E W tracks. Denver August 4 John W Springer president of the National Live Stock Association warns beef packers against forming a combine. He says any merger would ruin stockmen and the public and would provoke a united fight by livestock producers and consumers. He urges packers to beware and implies the limit has been reached in their grasping.
The U S government suit against the beef trust advances as demurrers filed by defendants in Chicago argue the complaint is multifarious and insufficient for relief. Lawyers for the packers contend discovery and relief grounds are not met, signaling possible amendments or defenses after judges return Oct. 1.
Atlantic City aug 4 the embarkation day reunion of the Knights of Columbus concluded with a banquet for about 500. Rev cantwell gave prayers and William Michael Byrne spoke on Some Issues of the Hour. Other speakers included John J Gardiner Henry Burk E A Philbin Thomas Cummings George Monaghan and Frank Smith. A cable to Pope Leo XIII praised his pontificate and the spirit of amity toward the American republic.

Arb McDonald dropped a stick of dynamite from a boat to kill fish in the Maquoketa river. The blast blew McDonald to atoms. John Ralston and Peter McCabe were in the boat and escaped serious harm. They face trial for violating game laws.
