A Washington dispatch reports the Republican campaign text book on trusts, calling for moderate, fact based remedies and warnings against overreach. It contrasts Republican calls to curb monopolies with Democratic plans for broad agitation and tariff debate, citing McKinley and Roosevelt era precedents and trust share figures.
The census shows lumber and its manufactures with only 3 percent controlled by trusts and textiles with about 44 percent. It notes other industries like paper, leather, clay, glass, and stone are largely free from trust control, and 7.5 percent of wage earners are in trusts. A U S Department of Labor bulletin reports mixed wage effects after combinations.
The negro young people Christian and educational congress will open in Atlanta next Wednesday afternoon and run through the week. Plans are on an extensive scale with an expected attendance of five to six thousand colored delegates. A railside crash six miles north of Cadillac involved an eleven coach Ann Arbor excursion train carrying 700 passengers. No deaths reported though about a dozen were injured, several seriously, including G D Young, G D Boardman, Charles Nye, Otis Sprague, and Henry Day. Train from Durand to Crystal Lake and Frankfort, ran at 35 mph. Flange on a wheel of the baggage and smoking car next to the engine is blamed.
In Elgin two street cars telescoped after a switch left open for three empty cars. The Elgin to Dundee car crashed into landing cars, fifteen passengers were injured, with motorman Frank Warner and other riders among the seriously hurt. First reports list multiple critical injuries and possible fatalities.
Indianapolis & Eastern Traction cars resumed Sunday then faced a Charlottesville disruption. Sheriff Larrabee and 75 deputies blocked tracks with a log and forced passengers to transfer. Arrests, bond, and threats of court action defined a tense stand over a quarantine and potential dynamite plot.
John W. Chipman of the Indianapolis & Eastern Traction Company defends operations near Charlottesville. He explains cars were delayed to respect local wishes, then allowed after doctors and Greenfield residents deemed conditions safe and quarantines were lifted. He notes obstructions by Charlottesville residents and vows continued service with strong watch on Knightstown tracks.
Aaron Halle, condemned for the murder of Minys Mary Brannigan, has had two stays since June 4 1900 and will be executed at Sing Sing tomorrow. He showed stoic indifference to his fate and excitement over the crime while awaiting the electric chair. Halle proposed marriage on May 16 but Brannigan refused due to religious differences. He pawned his coat for five and spoke of buying a revolver.
A man fires twice at his wife behind a sales counter, killing her within ten minutes. Police arrive to a calm suspect, Halle, who waits at the scene and rolls a cigarette. Anxious crowds witnessed the fatal incident in a shop.
New York Aug 3 Alandsman E Brocar of the U S cruiser Montgomery at Brooklyn navy yard killed himself by poison on board the vessel. Despondent over failing naval yeoman exam he had recently joined the service. He was 19 and from Louisville Ky his body to be sent there at family request. He had been transferred from the receiving ship Columbia after learning he was nearly promoted except for defective eyesight.
President Roosevelt and his family kept to Sagamore Hill on a calm Sunday after attending divine service at Christ Episcopal Church. A severe thunderstorm drove them indoors for most of the afternoon. Special Ambassador Whitelaw Reid and Ja. Reid, freshly back from England, are to visit tomorrow.
The Chicago packers who were enjoined in May by the United States Circuit Court from conspiring to fix meat prices will file their reply today. The reply will be a demurrer claiming the injunction is no violation of the interstate commerce law for packers to ship goods and price lists to their own agents in other States.
War veteran Gen Jacob H Smith, back from Manila, discusses his forced retirement saying it was unwelcome but he served faithfully. He defends his campaigns in Luzon and Samar, asserts obedience to military rules, and declines to discuss other personal matters. He plans to rest at Ports mouth, Ohio.
Reports from the provinces show 5 cholera cases and 535 deaths last Saturday, with a total 21 408 cases and 16 106 deaths since the outbreak began. In Manila 48 Americans and 18 Europeans have died. The transport General Alva will take Governor Taft from Rome to Manila next Tuesday, with banquets planned in his honor by the Chamber of Commerce and the Federal party.
Manila reports Pablo Mauras, a ten year terror of Romblon, captured by the native constabulary on neighboring Panay island. Bound for Romblon he leaped from a boat during transfer and drowned while attempting to escape.
In El Reno Oklahoma today Joseph Podawoski stabbed his wife four times in the back entering the right lung and stabbed his twelve year old daughter twice before shooting himself and slashing his throat. Podawoski died a few hours later leaving his age unknown and his wife and daughter probably aged.

Harry Nipple, Frederick resident, was arrested on Virginia lynching charges after being accused of aiding the mob that attacked Craven in Leesburg. He appeared before Justice Wood and awaits Virginia authorities' next hearing.
