Indiana legislature reaches education and reform agreements
The House and Senate reached accords on extra state appropriations welfare administration license branch reform and election procedure improvements. A large share goes to public school funding with 10.45 million direct aid and 4.5 million for education programs including transfer tuition for special education and accountability initiatives. The license branch overhaul creates a state DMV commission to supervise branches with pilots starting 1987 and full take over by 1988. A state recount commission will oversee federal state and legislative recounts with uniform ballot handling rules. A special caucus will fill vacancies when officials resign. One day remains to wrap up in 1986 on March 5 for technical corrections.
