Died September 14 1901 at 2 15 am age 68 from gangrene of the stomach and pancreas after a gunshot wound. Included are birthplace Niles Ohio and last residence Washington District of Columbia.
Vice President Theodore Roosevelt arrived in Buffalo at 1 30 PM and was met by police and signal servicemen at Terrace Station. He took the oath of office at Ansley Wilcox house administered by Judge Hazel and issued proclamations mourning McKinley and calling an extraordinary Senate session for cabinet confirmations.
Buffalo reports the grand jury indicted Leon Czolgosz for murder in the first degree. He was arraigned but refused to plead. Judge Emery assigned Lorain L. Lewis and Robert C. Titus as counsel. Crowd surged as the prisoner was led to the jail through the tunnel.
The remains of President McKinley lie in state in Buffalo City Hall after a ceremonial sequence. The American Church in Berlin was crowded with Germans, British and Americans for a mourning service held Sunday morning. Attendees included Baron Von Richthofen, Baron White, Mr Jackson, Mr Mason, and the Koehler family, with other German-Americans joining in the tribute.
A death mask of the late President McKinley was molded at 7 20 o clock in Buffalo New York. Eduard L A Vauseh of Hartford Connecticut took the mask which faithfully reproduces the president's features.
