In Utica on October 11 authorities disclose that Patrick Brennan, a city resident and father of four, assaulted his eighteen year old daughter in February. The daughter bore a son on February 22 and kept silent due to fear. Brennan was arrested yesterday and held for grand jury action.
A northeast gale caused tidal waves in the Savannah River at noon and tonight, submerging rice plantations. Banks broke and the crop is largely under water with an estimated loss of 60 to 75 percent. Hutchinson Island residents fled to the city as inundation spread upriver. Rice along the Ozeeche and Sati'la Rivers also damaged, many fields likely total losses.
John G. Huebinger’s Frankenmuth store and flouring mill in Savinaw County were robbed last night. Burglars blew the safe, took 575 dollars in cash and 1590 dollars in town orders and drafts on New York Chicago and Detroit, then stole a valuable span of horses and left the thieves’ worn-out horse behind. No clues yet. Huebinger’s isolated buildings lack a watchman.

Philadelphia dispatch reports great anxiety for the safety of the Swedish bark Prima, Captain Holm, which sailed from Hull on July 10 bound for this port. With a cargo of eight hundred tons of chalk and a crew of thirteen, she is now ninety three days out and consignees have deemed her lost.
New York October 9. Reports to BP. G. Dun & Co. show 183 U S failures and 22 in Canada this week, totaling 907 for the United States and Canada, up from 196 last week and 18 the week before. The rise concentrates in the Pacific and Western states.
In St Paul Minnesota October 11 a Swede named Olson and his daughter were boating when their skiff collided with the steamer Ida Campbell on the Mississippi River. The skiff capsized and Olson and his daughter drowned.
New York reports 280 pounds of dynamite dislodged Flood Rock in Hell Gate. The explosion drew crowds and experts who watched from vantage points as engineers recorded the event. Officials say the reef is honeycombed and will fall apart with future removal blasts if needed.
New York reports Cardinal Mc Closkey died at 12:50 AM after family and staff were at his bedside. He faded after a period of unconsciousness beginning around 4 AM with Dr Keyes present and no struggle observed.
C H Haskins returned from New York where he arranged tests for moving car telegraphy on the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul line. A Edison influenced system will be installed inside cars to enable telegraphic communication between moving trains. Experiments start on an eastern railroad this week and will move to Milwaukee within ten days.
In St Louis on October 8 a crowd formed between Seventh and Eighth streets on Pine street. They derailed and pushed Union depot line cars downhill creating a barricade. A stabbing occurred during a scuffle as police arrived and dispersed the crowd. Cars on embargoed lines were withdrawn with no further runs that night.
Mrs Va yonica Bull ended a fifty nine day fast in Syracuse on October 8 dying from the extreme hunger strike. She had lived on water with small amounts of morphine and weighed 140 pounds at death. Her husband died eight years ago in an insane asylum and the post mortem was performed this afternoon.
In Alfred, Susquehanna County, Government officers raided Stephen Tiffanys premises on Tuesday, finding a complete distillery with two thousand gallons of contraband spirits and arresting Tiffany. Chandler of Gibson, a saloon keeper, was arrested as an accessory with four hundred gallons seized. Moonshine operations have been extensive for years and more arrests are expected.
Wasni IncTon October 9. The Treasury halted five cent pieces and pennies due to $800000 in hand. Complaints arise over scarcity of minor coins. They can be obtained here or at sub-treasuries in exchange for lawful money, but the recipient must cover express charges. This partly explains the shortage.
A small boat capsized in the Chetails River in Washington Territory as it passed rapids. Mrs. A N Cunningham and Mrs Hutchins with her child died. J H Fairchild W A Hutchins and another passenger were rescued after a perilous struggle. Bodies of the woman and child recovered.
In Dushore, Pennsylvania, Arabella Kentner, 23, obtained a verdict of 10,000 dollars against Sheriff Lewis Zaner for breach of promise of marriage. Zaner, 70, deserted Miss Kentner to wed another woman.
SHAMOKIN PA October 9 A Polish slate picker worker at Lake Fiddles breaker slipped and fell into a revolving box containing monkey rollers used for preparing small coal sizes. The machinery could not be stopped in time and his body was ground to pieces.
In Williamsport on October 9, news reports that Clarence Clark, once a wealthy druggist, died by his own hand several weeks earlier. Yesterday his wife, a member of a prominent family formerly of Wilkes-Barre, took opium and died, marking a tragic double death linked to social prominence.
The State Veterinary Surgeon examined affected horses and found glanders present in the county. All cases were confirmed and the animals were treated or quarantined according to official procedures.

Many colored volunteers in the Southern States around April 1866 are affected.
A fire at five this morning gutted thirteen eight story Charter House warehouses on Aldergeate Street. Most buildings and contents were destroyed within hours. Origin unknown. Occupants included fancy goods dealers, farriers, toy stores and printing offices. one bank survived but heavily damaged. Estimated loss about £3,000,000.
In Newark on October 8 Judge Depue ruled that under the Civil Rights law a hotel keeper is not required to admit colored persons to the common dining room.
London reports Herbert Gladstone told Leeds electors that Liberal leaders agree abolishing the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland is needed and that England should yield to Ireland’s demand with safeguards for Crown rights. Also cholera cases aboard Couronne and Servian army movements abroad reported in Newfre Presse dispatches.
About one hundred weekly reports from post offices show modest use of the special delivery system since October 1. Cincinnati lists twenty messengers delivering 189 letters in the first week, Cleveland twenty eight delivering 441 letters, and Dubington has one messenger who delivered nineteen letters. Average earnings per messenger vary, and delivery time in Cincinnati averaged fifteen and a half minutes, indicating improved efficiency.
A terrible accident on Mahoning Creek near Mill Irons dam in Kittanning PA killed three young women aged fifteen to eighteen as their boat capsized while crossing to Mill Irons church. W S Neale, an expert swimmer, survived after a long struggle. bodies recovered about two hours later.
In Belgrade 1885 a Swedish church trial explored allegations of witchcraft. A woman with three year illness accuses her aunt, witnesses testified to flying crafts and infected victims, though no definite action was decided.
In Holdridge Nebraska the fourth class post office was added to Presidential offices on January 1. Nine months passed with no applications or recommendations for a postmaster. The current postmaster, holding a fourth class commission, is paid as a Presidential Postmaster, a situation said to be unprecedented.
The body of T. H. Eatherly a Presbyterian minister recently from Nashville Tennessee was found last Friday by the roadside several miles from Houston Missouri. He had a shot through the head a discharged double barrel pistol in his hand a watch and chain and 60 dollars on him. Authorities deem the death a suicide based on papers on his person and surrounding circumstances.
In Utica New York on October 12 Dr Richter of Middleville Herkimer County was found guilty of second degree murder for killing Josiah W Smith of Fairfield Academy and faces life at Auburn Prison. Mary Druse, who aided her mother in killing and burying her father in Warren Herkimer County, pleaded guilty to second degree murder and was sentenced to life at Onondaga Penitentiary.
Allegan Michigan October 12 Charles Gillano of Wayland was killed by burglars who broke into his home. He retrieved a neighbor's revolver after seeing intruders and was shot as he reentered. Authorities describe it as a fatal home invasion.
Paris reports a dispatch from Tamatave stating Admiral Miot's forces clashed with the Hovas near Pessando Bay on September 26. Casualties numbered twenty-one killed and wounded, with about two hundred more. The fleet blockaded Natamencry port as Miot moved toward Mejuns.
