New York May 19. The Norton line steamer Etona reached port from the River Platte via St Lucia where she took coal May 10. Capt Cantell recalls the Roddam's escape from Martinique eruption three days earlier, describing decks buried in fine ash two feet deep, fire from hot dust, burned limbs, exposed remains, charred rigging, smashed skylights, and a ruinous scene aboard the vessel.

Washington on May 15 Secretary Root accepted Louis Klopsch's offer of 1 000 barrels of flour for Martinique sufferers and ordered the flour to be carried on a government ship to the stricken islanders.

Justice had been barred from the home after a divorce suit alleging cruelty and drunkenness. He hid in a chicken house and fired when she fed the chickens. No witnesses.
Severe snow storm from Saturday night continues with ten to fourteen inches of wet snow, much melting in valleys. Thousands of sheep and lambs are dying, with Uintah county losses estimated at two hundred thousand head valued over one million dollars. The storm has at times reached blizzard strength, leaving ranges uncontrollable as adjournment of Congress looms.
The Fraterville coal mine near Coal Creek Tennessee suffered a gas explosion early Monday, killing between 175 and 225 miners and boys. Only one man, William Morgan, survived but was too badly injured to live, as rescuers battled gas and collapsed slate to reach the mouth of the mine.

Word arrived here of Lieut R C Day death from consumption at San Isidro Luzon. He served as captain of Troop L rough riders in the Cuban campaign and was promoted by President Roosevelt for gallantry at San Juan Hill. He was treasurer of Neuva Ecija province at his death. The family lives at Colorado Springs.
Washington May 20 The committee on claims of the house authorized a favorable report on the senate bill to reimburse surviving members of the life saving corps who were damaged by the Galveston flood in Texas.
The monthly internal revenue report lists April 1902 collections at 21,937,699 dollars, down 5,003,880 from April 1901. For ten months of the current fiscal year receipts total 226,206,979 dollars, down 27,865,509 from the previous year’s period.
