The colored preacher Geo Hervey was convicted of torturing his 13-year-old niece Rosa Hervey. Judge Corn condemns the brutal acts and imposes six months hard labor, a $200 fine, and costs, noting mercy was not due. His wife received a related sentence after claiming responsibility.

Pittsburg Kansas dispatch reports a Missouri Pacific passenger train was held up by two men in disguise. Lou Jeff, a colored miner, was killed after protesting the robbery. W L Westlake of Toledo Ohio, visiting relatives, was shot in the hand by a stray bullet from the robbers. The theft netted about $100, several watches and revolvers.

Ethel Herbert a timid 17 year old in Cleveland described how a man tailed her moving from a laundry to her home then tried to kiss her. She struck him twice with a metal pocketbook injuring his cheek and led police to arrest him. John Molorisch the alleged assailant is sent to the probate court.
Mrs. J. F Kile of this city traveled to Detroit to marry Otto Webber of Detroit. They obtained a Windsor marriage license but on returning she refused to proceed after a dispute over her first husband’s picture in the home. She stated she would not marry him.
Rev Harvey E Simon of Trinity Lutheran resigns after preaching against secret societies. He refused to officiate at a Masonic and I O O F funeral, denouncing ministers who join such orders as stool pigeons of the devil in a sharp Ashland sermons.
Charles Link aged 36 of Toledo was found dead at Walbridge Park with a bullet wound to the brain. A note on his person says he killed himself and left his body to the Toledo Medical College to reveal the reason for his rash act. officials say ill health contributed to the deed.
Philadelphia March 5 announcement from the Pennsylvania Railroad Co states that beginning May 1 freight rates on bituminous coal to tidewater will rise 5 cents per ton. The move affects shipments to coastal destinations and follows recent pricing trends in the coal market.
Dayton Ohio grand jury completed an eight week session and examined four hundred witnesses in the Dona Gilman murder case but returned no indictments.
Waverly, Iowa area marshal Rob inson released a handcuff bracelet for 19 year old Roy West during transport after a burglary arrest. West slipped the loosened bracelet, freed his hand, and leaped from the carriage into nearby woods, vanishing from sight.

Bellefontaine, O. Louis Moore was arrested in Piqua and brought back on a desertion charge involving his three minor children. Twelve-year-old Homer Moore testified that since age five his father sent him to steal, directing where to go and what to take. Items recovered included a ladder from the city hall and a leather belt from a sawmill, valued at $146.
