The conference committee objected to government travel for trade gains, but business leaders, chiefly from the Mississippi Valley, urged the step and the proposition carried. Townsend had opposed the Commission yet said he originated the idea for a continental commercial conference to expand trade.

A grand stand roof and foundation failed at the Butte Montana racecourse yesterday. Five hundred spectators fell about twenty feet, killing one boy and injuring a dozen others, with two not expected to survive. Mayor Owetry was injured while helping. Women fainted and children cried amid wreckage and panic.
During a Friday fireworks display sparks ignited pyrotechnics in a box, killing John Durfee the farmer instantly and striking his brother John Durfee the Burton druggist, who died hours later. Several others were injured but survived.

Philadelphia July 5 Judge Penrose filed an adjudication as trustee of Mary L Davidson's estate. She promised Richard A Carden an extra 10 000 if he behaved, he had been cared for by the Davidson sisters since age three. Judge Hanna today overruled the prior adjudication finding the exceptions well taken.
A July 5 wind storm in Rich Hill Missouri wrecked the Pres byterian Church a brick structure unroofed the West End Schoolhouse the M E Church lifted from its foundation and a flax factory unroofed. Several persons were slightly hurt no deaths reported. Property damage in town and nearby may reach $20000 with additional damage at Walnut in the same county.
The eighteen year old Gerry Phillips was found dead in a farmer's woods near Salineville, Columbiana County, with a bullet hole above the left eye. Two young men named Hunter and Tarish were detained as suspects. Hunter reportedly confessed involvement in the earlier incident. The coroner's inquest is pending.
The Government spends about $50,000 a year for repair of mail pouches. About 100000 mail bags are in use and 10000 new ones are bought each year. The weakest point is the bag closure where staples protrude and bend or break when bags are jostled.
LouisvILLE July 5 The Courier Journal special reports a nighttime confrontation in Hickman County between Lucien Perry and William Perry Jr Will Oakley and Colonel Britt. Oakley was shot five times and killed instantly. Britt was shot three times and critically wounded. Perry Jr allegedly fired the fatal shots and parties have not been arrested.
A cyclone passed north of Crawfordsville Minnesota last evening causing extensive damage to homes barns wheat fields and machinery. Farm losses include five thousand dollars on one property and fifteen hundred on another. Six horses were buried in a collapsed barn and six acres of wheat were blown loose.
A boiler explosion at Rogers' saw mill in Tara Ontario today leveled the building. Engineer Wm. Walker was killed while D. Bennett and another worker, unnamed, were probably fatally injured.
In Weehawken, Patrick Mahan, a car inspector for New York and West Railroad, spotted an unavoidable crash between a departing passenger train and a drill engine. He leapt to the front platform and attempted to absorb the impact to save others, losing his life as the tender crushed him. Both trains escaped, but the passenger car injuries damaged by wreckage.
Paris reports Dr th e dissected the body of a marine who died after two hours of illness. The disease is claimed to be undoubted Asiatic cholera raging in Toulon and Marseilles. Dr Reeh warns Europe may see spread despite baggage fumigation and sanitary measures. He urges strict quarantine to prevent introduction and dormancy of the germ.

Reports from Berks Lebanon and Montgomery counties describe yesterday's storm as a cloud burst several miles wide. Roads submerged bridges washed away barns and houses unroofed. Acres of fields washed out as if crops never planted.
