Miss Kiska Haverfield, aged thirteen, covertly weds William P. Baird after a coerced license obtained through deceit. Detectives pursue the couple from Cincinnati to Chattanooga and Dayton, with the girl in a locked car as authorities intervene. Miss Haverfield previously resided in South Bend and attended a Cincinnati boarding school.
On the night of January 2 four male paupers were stolen from Cook County Infirmary Morgue at Jefferson. A wagon was used and coffins bodies and shrouds were taken while the watchman slept. County Commissioners offer a $1,000 reward for the thieves.
Reports from Buenos Ayres via Galveston recount that Aidé de Camp Belon stopped Flamand from entering President Santos house. Flamand attacked Belon, who defended himself with a knife, wounding Flamand four times and causing his death.

The Chippewa then adopted a hostile stance and one Chippewa was shot by Potawatomi. Several days later a renewed engagement left five combatants dead.

Miss Johanna Offt, a Saxony born dramatic performer, shot herself last night after unrequited affection. She was found insensible and dying, with little hope of recovery.

January 13 report from Erie says Leonardo Giaemo fatally shot a fellow Italian in the breast after a brief quarrel. He fired three more times, but only Charles De Carlos was wounded and not mortally. Giaemo was captured by police.
Victoria January 13. A stringent anti Chinese law will be introduced in the house. It would declare it unlawful for Chinese to enter British Columbia and impose an annual tax on Chinese over fourteen years, to be fixed by the house.
The Commissioners appraised lands of D. B Bennett, Harriet Bennett and others for New York Lackawanna Western Railroad warehouses and related needs. The award totals $469,375 with Mrs Bennett to receive $355,891. The award has not yet been confirmed.
In Bretuin on January 13 it is stated that Emperor William refused a divorce between Prince Frederick Charles and his wife, and that a separation was mutually agreed upon.
A large mass of ice drifted down the East River wrecking pier No. 27 and ruining a substantial stock of flour stored there. The schooner Homes from San Francisco was badly damaged in the incident.
In a country road quarrel between Jeff Gilliland and John Malone near Fayetteville Arkansas last night Gilliland fired at Malone but missed. Malone returned fire killing Gilliland who was described as the Jessie James of Arkansas a noted desperado and local legend.

Milwaukee January 13 Henry Roman thirty three who killed McGill at Oshkosh in 1875 and was sentenced to the State prison at Waupun escaped tonight.
A posse hunted Sandy Robinson on the Bannerman plantation when Joseph Lathrop opened a cabin door and was killed. Robinson seized the fallen gun and fled as pursuers close in. Lynching is anticipated as authorities pursue the suspect.
During a quarrel in John Omble's house in Mount Carmel Pennsylvania on January 13 John Lindermuth and John Omble were seriously stabbed Omble's injuries are fatal Lindermuth was jailed.
In Reading Pennsylvania on January 11 a brief item notes nearly all two hundred cigarmakers have struck. Reported wage increases range from 4 to 350 dollars per thousand as workers seek higher pay and have gone elsewhere.
Barnstable Mass January 11 Hen O Holmes and Mrs Paul Sherman of Hyannes left Sandy Neck in a skiff for this village. They have not reached here and it is feared both are drowned.
Authorities barred a nationalist meeting announced in County Fermanagh. MP Biggar was named as a participant and the event faced prohibition by the authorities ahead of January 13.
In Reavine Pennsylvania on January 14 a catastrophic explosion at the Corn near Lebanon iron ore mine ripped through a small work building. A young man named Jot Pansy was killed after being torn apart by the blast and severed limbs. He died soon after. New York January 14. Mrs Alma Lillian Bennett files suit in the City Court of Brooklyn against Charlotte E Bennett her mother in law for fifty thousand dollars. She claims that after her marriage in 1882 the mother in law alienated her husband’s affections leading him to Switzerland and Florida, depriving her of husband, comfort, society and support.
John H. Fleming and Fred L. Loring were convicted before Judge Blodgett of carrying on an extensive rain swindle as Fleming and Merriam. Each received twelve months in county jail and a $500 fine. A writ of error was granted by Judge Drummond and the pair released on $10,000 bail.
Independence Missouri January 14 Chief of Police John M Swearingen while placing a prisoner in the station house tonight dropped his revolver. The weapon discharged the ball entered his groin and lodged in his bowels. Physicians say he cannot recover. He is esteemed and considered an efficient impartial officer.
News of a terrible disaster at sea reports the coasting steamer Hwaigner driven ashore between Shanghai and Foo Chow. The vessel carried a large number of passengers and latest reports list about 200 drowned, most of them natives. The ship is a total wreck.
The Boston Produce Exchange resolves that Congress should prohibit importation from France or Germany of adulterated wines or other health harming articles. The move follows interdicts by those nations on American pork.
