In Blanchard near Shreveport, Charles Attaway was shot and killed by his divorced wife, Mrs Will Kent Jr, after she and her husband Will Kent, Jr confronted Attaway at Kent’s home over custody. Kent wrestled Attaway during the scene.
Tacoma, July 31. John Mc Lean, described as a half-breed Colville Indian, confessed to a stool pigeon in an adjoining cell that he killed Judge and Mrs. Lewis at Almira three years ago. McLean is believed to have murdered at least two others.
Mayfield Kentucky on July 31 reports Miss Ethel McClain, victim of Allen Mathis, in precarious condition. Citizens, enraged by the crime, vow to avenge her and threaten there will be no trial if Mathis is brought to town.
Washington reports Ambassador Meyer in St. Petersburg sent a dispatch to the state department reviewing the Russia situation and stating there is no probability of a general strike by laborers at this time.
Robbers attacked the Gomel mail stage, killing the postman and severely wounding the driver. They seized the registered mail and have made two arrests.

In New York on July 31 James Toyne a Buffalo contractor and Charles Johnson a Black youth clung to the side of a giant chimney 140 feet high for four hours with only frail scaffolding boards between them and certain death.
In Warsaw outside a crowded church a person fired a revolver. The ensuing panic killed five people and injured many more, with a large number of others harmed in the chaos.
In Dayton Ohio Gilbert Thomas Lloyd 35 a native of England faces bigamy charges. Wife No 2 Rose Lloyd holds a contract from July 1896 with Wife No 1 in Sussex promising Lloyd about 20 pounds weekly and a permanent separation. Payments reportedly came via a Toronto bank and Lloyd says an older brother funds an English estate. Lloyd has not lived with Wife No 2 for some time. arrest follows her cooperation.
Dan R. Hanna son of the late Senator Hanna was denied a permanent injunction against Congressman Beidler but intends to sue. Hanna’s attorney Denison alleges Beidler Mullins Brokenshire and Goddon directors of West Lebanon Coal Co plan to sell mine output to a faction member for five years, barring majority stockholders T F Young R L Ireland and John J Purcell from profits. Judge Blandin defends Beidler faction as an internal stockholders’ dispute. Denison says Hanna seeks damages from the Beidler side.

Piffin O A Whitney owns a small black and tan terrier named Fanny who for three years has adopted and cared for three to four small chickens each year. After a hen brood loss on a railroad track last week, Fanny rescued and mothered a dozen orphan chicks, placing them in a box and tenderly guiding them back to the nest.
In Toledo two weeks ago Mrs. A G Blair and her daughter Mrs Elliott C Prentiss returned from Washington. The daughter died next day of heart trouble and Mrs Blair fell ill and died hours later. Mrs A G Blair Jr gave birth to a baby girl shortly after. The family is prominent.
John Cylikisky, a Cleveland cab driver, and his horse were struck dead by lightning while waiting with other cabmen in front of 2572 Sykora 4 as funeral services for Mrs. J. Crump began. The carriage was untouched, and the incident occurred at the moment mourners gathered.

Roy Adams was operating a scraper on the W. L. E. improvement at Brewster when it struck an obstacle. He was thrown about 15 feet and landed on a sharp rod that pierced his abdomen and exited through his thigh.
William Burns of Delaware, formerly of Marysville, who appeared here as Hiki the Snake Eater with the Hoosier Amusement Co, was fatally bitten by a rattlesnake during a performance.

In Marietta Ohio the Ohio Valley express on the B and Q road wrecked a touring car at Williamstown across the Ohio River. All four occupants escaped injury though four people were in the vehicle.
Benjamin Smith, 18, died after six youths beat and shot him on a farm northeast of Columbus while defending his employer’s daughter. The attack left him dead from his injuries.
A lightning bolt hit the Methodist church at Zanesfield near Bellefontaine, causing near wreckage. A residence owned by Samuel Antrim at North Lewisburg burned. Haile fell about 15 minutes south of the area and the corn crop was badly damaged.
Charles B. Webb founder of the Garretsville Journal and for 49 years proprietor and editor of its columns died at his home in Garretsville. He was a highly respected citizen, long associated with the paper and community.
Canton, Ohio. Associate Justice William R. Day of this city has accepted an invitation to deliver the principal address at the unveiling of the monument to McKinley being erected by Ohio at Columbus.
A. B. Huzeens, 35, a brakeman for the Pennsylvania Railroad, was killed in the Wat Sonsigent yards after being crushed between two freight cars. He died almost instantly.

D county Commissioner Hawkins was shaken when lightning struck the farm of Truman Humphrey in Richfield. The barn and its contents were destroyed, with losses estimated at $5,000. Hawkins had just exited the barn when the bolt hit.
