The Sarasota County Board of Public Instruction plans a voter referendum next Tuesday on a $10,975,000 bond issue. The piece argues costs per pupil, compares private schooling, and cites administration time spent on the election amid figures and disputes.
A meeting to discuss the proposed Mission Valley Golf and Country Club will be held tonight at the Holiday Inn at 8 p.m. About 70 people attended the first meeting for a 27 hole complex with a clubhouse and swimming pool. Charter memberships at 1500 each are limited to 200. Construction starts after 75 percent of charter memberships are sold. The first phase includes 18 holes with nine more to follow as memberships grow. Mission Valley lies north of Laurel Road and east of U.S. Highway 41.
Haven Page of Casey Key is announced as the Gondolier’s new columnist for Dear Sir or Madam. The Sarasota income tax practitioner has a journalism background from 1923 and a Yale education, with Navy reserve service and civic work in Sarasota County since 1955.
The 1967 edition of The Warrior, Venice High School annual, has arrived. Graduates may pick up books in Room 301 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A receipt is required. Work has begun on the 1968 annual with co editors Linda Shearer and Susan Victor.
The Sarasota County Hospital Board debates a 6.7 million dollar bond slated for Nov 7 to fund Sarasota Memorial and South County needs. Commissioners urge South County inclusion while a Venice Hospital expansion could reduce new facility pressure. A joint Oct 16 with Venice Hospital is planned to study options.
A study for Sarasota Memorial Hospital by consultant Everett W. Jones projects intensive population growth across Sarasota County. It urges expanding Venice Hospital and coordinating care with North Port Charlotte Englewood facilities to serve areas including Cape Haze Placida and Punta Gorda, with bed counts and occupancy noted for Sarasota Memorial Doctors Venice Hospital and related facilities.
Jones cites population growth and Medicare and Medicaid as drivers of rising demand for general hospital care in Sarasota and Charlotte Counties. He notes Venice Hospital plans for 40 to 50 extra beds and a future extended care unit, with Memorial Hospital facing 750 bed expansion that may worsen traffic and access for South County patients.
A kick off luncheon in Country Club Estates Venice marks the second annual campaign to send care packages to U S service members in Vietnam. Proceeds topped $100 with total first day gifts over $200. Residents invited to submit names, ranks, serials and APOs for gifts to arrive before Christmas.
The deadline to file absentee ballots for the Sarasota County school bond issue is Monday at p.m. The $10,975,009 bond funds additions and renovations to existing buildings including projects at Englewood Nokomis Venice and South County schools. Absentee ballots available through Mary Orr in the County Courthouse. South County annex not listed. Voters must be registered freeholders or present proof of property ownership to vote.
Applicants for substitute teaching positions are being sought as a contingency for a potential statewide walkout. About 45 to 50 residents attended a South County meeting to pursue temporary teaching certificates and be prepared to walk in if needed. Applications are available from the County Board of Public Instruction and will be reviewed for certification or rejection. A follow up meeting is scheduled for tonight at 7 30 in the Community Room of the Venice office of First Federal Savings and Loan Association.
