Venice High to salute dual valedictorians at graduation

The Bicentennial year class at Venice High School will hear from two valedictorians instead of one. Richard Garland and Eugene Reck, both sons of local residents, will address their peers jointly during the early commencement program. Photographs and more ceremony details appear on pages 14 and 15.

Ace Cab Company Wins City Council Rate Increase

Ace Cab Company of Venice secured a rate hike after presenting to the City Council. The company cited rising costs and lack of profit, proposing new fares of 70 cents for the first seventh mile and 10 cents per seventh mile thereafter, boosting average trip revenue by about 20 cents. The council noted bus route deviations and agreed to enforce set routes, while approving the requested increase.

County officials back subsidized Venice Ambulance for South County

Sarasota County Commission adopts an emergency ordinance to fund interim ambulance service for South County by subsidizing the Venice Ambulance Service after its closure. County Administrator Ed Maroney had proposed a new Osprey station under CETA but switched to the subsidy plan to keep costs under about $2,000. Reverend Parrett urged sticking with Venice Ambulance rather than a new South Trail district.

Face lift for beaches proposed by UF graduate plan

Sarasota County Commission heard a CSU style proposal from a UF architectural landscaping graduate to move Caspersen Beach roadway to the bay side to allow dunes to rebuild. The plan includes three inland parking areas for 780 cars with comfort stations and boardwalks to protect the dunes. Commission gave no decision on adopting the plan.

FAA official Sheppard invited amid city airport woes

A councilman remarks that the large city airport installation is troubled and suggests that maintaining an advisory board could have been wise as the ordinance is discussed. The note mentions FAA official Sheppard being invited.

Venice City Council Approves First Reading to Abolish Airport Advisory Board

City Council approved the ordinance in a first reading to abolish the Venice Airport Advisory Board. Council member Walker said he understood the majority opinion for abolition and urged considering ad hoc committees for airport input. Two more readings are required before adoption.
