A tornado spawned by a passing front ripped through Venice Municipal Airport late Friday, tearing loose eight aircraft and tossing one nearly 300 feet. Witnesses described a freight train roar as planes were hurled and cartwheeled along the runway. No injuries were reported.
Venice City Administrator Dale Rieth predicts the dual taxation dispute between the four Sarasota County municipalities and the county will not be resolved verbally. He cites a Florida Supreme Court ruling and a Peat Marwick study showing overpayments by Venice and Sarasota and underpayments by unincorporated areas. Rieth notes discussions with County Administrator Ed Maroney were inconclusive and says a long court-driven process lies ahead.
Venice Junior High presents an end of year band program directed by Richard Thierry on Tuesday June 1 at 7 30 p m in the Venice Campus Auditorium. The beginners perform first followed by the intermediate and the superior rated advanced band. Selections include marches classics and pops admission is free.
Jim King of Bradenton will be new director at Venice Recreation Center, graduating from the University of South Florida on June 13 with a health education degree. He has been a tennis pro at Bee Ridge Park and directed Osprey's children’s summer program. Douglass Greene of Sarasota, a 24 year old woman, joins from the Sarasota Recreation Department and has worked with its summer program and pre school classes. She plays softball and seeks a dynamic summer program.
The South County Family YMCA unveils its new Venice area center with open houses on June 5 and 6 from 10am to 4pm Saturday and 1pm to 4pm Sunday. Ribbon cutting at 10am Saturday and daily tours, with hourly door prizes and a Sunday MotoCross demonstration at 1pm.
