Italian Official Shot as Red Brigades Strike Amid Elections
Three men and a woman wounded Antonio Mazzotti 48, chief of personnel at Menarini, as he entered a Bologna building. Doctors said he was in critical condition. A caller claimed Red Brigades responsibility. Gunmen fled by car then by motorcycles. The attack came amid provincial and municipal elections across Italy assessing government stance against the Red Brigades after Moro’s May death. Political experts predicted gains for Christian Democrats and Communists, with smaller parties suffering. The deal Moro forged in February brought Communist support for CD leadership, despite U.S. warnings about growing communist influence.
