Frozen ground yields a bonanza in artifacts
Archaeologists thawed permafrost along the Alaska pipeline route to excavate sites near Galbraith Lake. At least 30 sites within an eight mile radius yielded tools, projectiles and flakes dating back 6 000 years as workers faced 40 below zero temperatures. The effort, run by University of Alaska and Alaska Methodist University under Alyeska to protect tundra, aims to map early nomadic caribou hunters along the Brooks Range and Yukon coast.
