Blue Beetle revels in a grounded reluctant hero origin
The film centers on Jaime Reyes, a recent Gotham II graduate who becomes the Blue Beetle after an alien Scarab inhabits his body. Set in Palmera City, a sunlit Miami-esque landscape, the story foregrounds the Reyes family’s financial struggles, gentrification pressures, and the personal cost of heroism. Raoul Max Trujillo and Bruna Marquezine appear as Carapax and Jenny Kord, with Susan Sarandon portraying the corporate antagonist as the plot grounds action in real-world stakes.

Blue Beetle review blends family warmth with action
The film earns three stars with a PG 13 rating, blending emotional moments from the Reyes family with kinetic action. Damian Alcazar and Elpidia Carrillo portray Jaime’s parents, Adriana Barraza is his grandmother, Belissa Escobedo plays a sharp sister, and George Lopez shines as Uncle Rudy amid a politically pointed, social commentary driven superhero story.
