Rushdie stabbed on stage at Chautauqua lecture
Salaman Rushdie was stabbed in the neck and abdomen during a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in New York. He was flown to a hospital, underwent surgery, and remained on a ventilator with severe injuries. Attacker Hadi Matar, 24, of New Jersey, was arrested at the scene. Fellow speaker Henry Reese was also injured. Police note motive unclear as crowd of about 2,500 fled. Rushdie’s decades old fatwa and threats tied to The Satanic Verses loom over the incident.
