NC House leader calls for special session to fix budget gap

North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis asked Gov. Bev Perdue to call a special session to address a looming budget gap that could force about 1,400 mentally ill residents in group homes from their homes before year end. The issue stems from a July budget tweak that excluded group homes from a nearly $40 million cushion for Medicaid eligibility changes, sparking a winter homeless risk for residents. Tillis pledged the focus would be group home funding only. Perdue stopped short of confirming a session but agreed action is needed.
