Peace, commerce, and a nation in hopeful recovery
A late 19th century editorial reflects on postwar business strength, noting foreign commerce rose from 420 million in 1853 to over 1100 million in 1871, domestic trade via railroads expanding to 64,000 miles, and currency stability. It cites Bismarck, history’s blanks, and wartime resilience while urging calm amid political noise. A separate brief notes local disturbances near Observatory Road and a tragic shooting in Ton, Ohio, with a child wounded and a man arrested, plus unrelated crime notices.
