Reports from Washington describe a violent melee and a fatal shooting amid political tensions. A Tribune Louisville special reports Judge Spaulding of the Apollo Hall delegation obtained a letter from O'Conor to be read for almost an hour, its content kept secret. The New York ticket names O'Conor as President and J. Q. Adams as Vice President, with Chauncey Burr urged for permanent Chairman. Herman Lipkin, 14 Hubert Street, fought James Frame and struck him with a heavy tumbler, causing fourteen scalp wounds and a fractured skull. Frame likely cannot recover. Lipkin was arrested.
Balance figures show currency 109.34 million, coin 73.92 million, certificates 28.96 million, unpaid interest 12.9 million in gold. Building 103 Chartier street owned by Lawrence Payne burned. loss estimated at 16 000 with 1 200 insured. Last week 112 deaths. city health proclaimed high.
PorTsville Pennsylvania reports that on September 3 the Republican district committee nominated John W. Kellinger for Congress. He is also the nominee of the Labor Reformers for the same seat.
The east end of Canterbury Cathedral burned with about 200 feet of roof lost. Soldiers extinguished the blaze. The Board of Control met today. County Jail holds 36 prisoners, including five women. Wardlaw Thomas & Co suffered a $50,000 loss from Middletown paper mill fire, insured for $35,900. A kitchen at 446 John Street was damaged by ore at 8:30 this morning. A concert at Fairmount M. E. Church tonight at 8 supports the church and Sabbath school.
At twelve o'clock the pork packers reassembled after a 10 o'clock adjournment to amend the delegate list for the Pork Packers' Convention. The new lineup includes J. L. Keck, G. F. Davis, Briggs Cunningham, John Morrison, Chas. Kahn Jr, Richard Mathers, Geo F. Ireland, Jason Evans, J. H. Porter, and Warren Ranson.

Christina Fahner accuses George Keller of assault. Keller discharged for insufficient evidence. Andrew Kelley discharged with clouded reputation. Dugan and Briggs sent to House of Refuge. Dwyer’s charge of stealing from a frail female drops. Maloy sent to House of Refuge. McCarthy and Sullivan postponed for trial. bail set at 1500 dollars. Carrie Smith held for trial on grand larceny with 1000 dollar bail. One John Smith released after an initial disorderly conduct charge.
