In Lansing Illinois a son shot his father after the father abused the family. The father, attacked with a fish spear, survived initial injuries but remained without hope of recovery. In Jacksonville Illinois a fourteen year old boy was accidentally shot in the abdomen by a pistol discharge.
A fourteen year old, eldest son of Patrick Grady, was killed by a lightning bolt while watching workmen dig near Davenport Indiana. The bolt struck the left temple tearing clothing from the chest and leg, throwing him four feet. A nearby girl, daughter of Mr. Webb, was paralyzed by the concussion and remained unable to be revived.

Last night the Newport council approved drawing up a remonstrance to Louisville Cincinnati Lexington railroad officials over traffic brought to Newport. Contracts for paving Elm Street and surrounding alleys were awarded to multiple contractors. A $2,000 request to build a sexton house and fence at Newport Cemetery was referred to a special committee. The meeting covered nuisance abatement bids, public building painting bids, and a $13,000 aggregate of sundry claims. The city budget shows receipts of $139,350 and estimated expenditures of $136,395. The tax levy is set at $1.50 per $100 of property. The city mourns the death of Mr. Griffin Thornton. Information from LIVERPOOL says the Cunard steamer Tripoli under Capt Barr, which departed Wednesday for New York, went aground on the South Block Tuskar coast and began taking water. Cargo is badly damaged but all crew and passengers were saved by a coasting vessel and taken to Waterford. later dispatches confirm the incident.
