Instructions for applying to Executive Departments at Washington have been prepared under recent civil service regulations approved by the President. The guidance material can be obtained on application to the head of either department.
In Chicago on May 15 the diverse trades held an orderly procession of about 4,000 workers with 1200 bricklayers 1000 carpenters 500 plasterers 250 stone cutters 275 painters and others. A single eight hour emblem appeared and a minor circus riot marred the night. Resolutions endorsed arbitration with a 50-50 employer and worker panel and urged nonviolence and cooperation. Mayor Medill and a worker gave temperate speeches.

A blaze at Christie property causes $5000 loss with no insurance. Irish Confederation convention organized at Military Hall Bowery with General Thomas F Burke elected president. Chamber of Commerce backs Washington Treaty supplemental article. eight hour stair builders strike planned. Greeley travels to Poughkeepsie then returns to New York. Bangor Republican district convention and Democratic state committee actions noted.
The Republican State Convention gathered delegates from nearly every county led by many colored delegates. Resolutions endorsed Grant, with efforts to renominate him at Philadelphia. No governor candidate chosen as convention favored supporting the Greeley Brown ticket. The day saw heated race excitement with two mile heats won by Anna B. and Euchre time 2.39, 2.38 and a mile heat by Quarter Master.
The Republican State Convention in Lincoln acted on credentials with a committee from each district. One hundred seventy nine delegates attended and were entitled to seats. The gathering moved slowly but showed full attendance from all parts and a prevailing sentiment in favor of Grant.
Weather bulletin reports cloudy spells and rain moving eastward from Washington on May 16 at 7 30 P M. Areas of rain expected across Middle and Southern New England tonight and Thursday with easterly to southerly winds. Gulf and South Atlantic States to see cloudy unsettled conditions and periods of rain. No dangerous winds forecast.
The paper reports Mr. Davis disavowing any authorisation to speak for Greeley or Cincinnati ticket plans. Weather notes a slight rain in western New York and drought across Arkansas Mississippi Alabama Louisiana threatening cotton crops. Speculators buy remaining old crop as drought and unsettled markets heighten risk.
The Iowa Democratic State Central Committee met in Low A. Drs Morris Iowa to plan a June 11 convention in the city to choose 22 delegates for the National Democratic Convention. The body, split on Greeley versus the regular nominee, held a secret session to avoid press coverage. A brutal assault in Dallas county left a 16 year old wounded and two Carters jailed after a fatal stabbing.
May 16 Pittsburg reports excavation near Corks Run tunnel on the Pan Handle road caused a landslide blocking the tunnel. Arrangements allowed trains to run via Mingo Junction on the Cleveland & Pittsburg line, but the track may remain blocked as debris continues to fall. River grade falls with three feet of water. weather clear.
May 16 Lexington Kentucky reports an immense crowd at yesterday's races. In the two mile heats for a club purse of 400 dollars Lytleton won with Hilderick second. Time 2 37 3 49 14. In the mile and a half dash for 200 dollars Longfellow won easily under heavy pull, Metella second, Aureola third. Longfellow was left out of pools with Auréois the favorite at heavy odds.
Telegrams from the Portage Lake mining district say the strike is practically over with miners at Schoolcraft Pewabic and Franklin resuming work. Troops have not reached Houghton. The Presbyterian Church General Assembly opens this morning with a sermon by retiring Moderator Rev. Z K Humphrey.
At Drs Quixcy Tils May 16 last Sunday morning the car factory of H J Quely & Sons at Hannibal Missouri burned. The fire destroyed the shops machinery stock and several new cars. Loss about 85000 insured for 12000 about 125 workers lose tools and employment. The report also mentions a Fontan day and a suit involving Aaron of New York and Lane with aws.
Senate conference report on the Deficiency bill was agreed to. Bills from the Judiciary Committee were reported. House bills included establishing a wire for presidential elections and providing stenographs for U S circuit courts. Tariff and Tax bill discussed. a rotary of War to accept the opening in Lake Erie passed the House. Holman moved to table.
The Herald of Health outlines cheese composition with water protein fat and minerals, noting half a pound of cheese equals a pound of meat for nitrogenous content and a third of a pound fat. It warns on old and new cheese, preservation in warm climates, mould, and compares American and English Swiss varieties. A California sheep grower with about 6000 head near Modesto sold his clip for twenty six cents per pound and received $500 down. Days later he realized the loss compared with market prices, an underpayment of twelve to fifteen cents per pound amounting to at least $3600. The note notes the wool buyer’s bargain and the grower’s regret.
German correspondents report a northwest and east Prussia emigration frenzy with Schleswig-Holstein seeing massive exodus, houses sold at ruinous prices, and agents shipping people to America and Queensland. Other items note Livingstone's death and later survival fantasy, a Rome horse race cancellation due to death, a St Petersburg jeweler incident, a lightning strike near Algona, and a large settlement dispute involving Constance.
Kit the Arkansas Traveler stars at Woods tonight along with Davis the ventriloquist at the National and a vivid Jack Sheppard production. Victor Flechter promises a top concert. Also notes on seats for Cincinnati, Covington mayoral convention, ward delegate counts, Holmes's fall, a dog bite, a deaf impostor, and local hotel renovations.
During the year ending April 30 1872 Newport cemetery records show 260 interments with 183 white males 99 white females 2 colored males 1 colored female 5 stillborn and 26 deaths by consumption 23 by small pox 18 by pneumonia 15 by in assists. John S Nixon plans ten days at the Court House to collect income tax from residents. A Carlisle suspect was arrested for stealing provisions from Lock Horner. Newport resident Thornton gravely ill with no recovery expected. McMahon says side walks and rails will be ready by July for the new railroad bridge. Proposals for ferry service to be received by Monday. Beatsch expects new building by July. A car driver named Thacker received a thrashing in Newport but it failed to fit.
Put-In-Bay notes the fishing season opening after a 100 bass catch by New York visitors Peabody and Worstell. Propr businessmen Swing West & Co. prepare the Put-In-Bay House for guests as calm weather and tourist interest rise. The Eleventh Ward election yields John Godar as councilman by a narrow tally, with official counts later showing Weitzel elected to the Board of Council.
In Washington on May 19 the Senate discussed the Baltimore railroad depot bill. Mr. Morrill moved for a two member committee to await Thomas Scott and asked if he had any communication to make to the Senate. The bill passed with no amendments.
The Democratic State Convention met in Rochester at 10:15 AM to hear the report of the Committee of Delegates recommending the appointment of John T. Hoffman Delos DeWolf Senator H. C. Murphy to the Senate at Large. The names drew immense cheering as the recommendation was adopted unanimously. Two alternates were chosen from each Congressional district and a motion to return thanks to the presiding officers was carried before adjournment sine die.
The Erie canal break near Fultonville last week is almost fully repaired and navigation is to resume tomorrow. Local crews worked through the week to restore waterway traffic.
Cotton markets remain quiet and firm as quotes hold steady. Telegraph market brief notes firm tone with little price movement and mentions other commodities trading in narrow bands.
Memphis reports a last night arrival and departure amid clear warm weather. The City of Cairo brought goods from New Orleans and St Louis but did not land after leaving Dexter and Chester. River levels show the Arkansas rising 19 feet at Little Rock while the White River climbs six feet.
