Nationwide brief notes report an academy destruction in Dusseldorf and reference political tensions including Judge Davis nomination and a fatal affray in Toronto. Other items mention fires in New York City and Chicago rejoicing alongside Louisiana and Rhode Island political conventions and a steamboat named Charmer.
A dispatch from Dusseldorf reports a tremendous blaze in Berlin last night destroying the famous Academy of Art and many celebrated paintings. Several other buildings were destroyed and full details are not yet available.
The Evening Post quotes supporters asserting Judge Davis will not seek a presidential nomination or engage in related political correspondence. In General Sessions Court Hackett challenges Daly’s court, risking ring trial complications. Other items include a Japanese embassy arrival, a bankruptcy ruling on the Siyvesant Bank, and Carl Vogt’s habeas corpus hearing in a Brussels murder case.
A large fire last evening in Watt Power caused $70,000 in losses destroying Campbell and Wood's planning mill and Wilkins and Muarcellus's bolt factory. Fire departments battled the flames but damages were extensive.
A Mt Washington telegram says last night was cloudy with 20 degrees below zero, a westward hurricane reaching 98 to 100 mph from the northwest. In Washington today, clear and very cold conditions prevailed with 19 degrees above zero by 9 PM.
A major fire at 8:30 am nearly destroyed the Simmons Slocum opera house at Arch Street 1003 1005. The building valued at $50,000 is insured by Royal Exchange London Liverpool and Globe and Farmers Montreal and others for $2,500 each. A wardrobe worth $3,000 was saved. William Simpson, engine No. 3 driver, fell from the roof and was severely injured, taken to hospital.
Rhode Island Democratic State Convention met in Providence with A. J. Barnaby elected president. Governors candidates include Olney Arnold, Charles R. Cutter, William J. Miller, George N. Bliss, and William P. Condon. In Newport Captain Lloyd Sutton was sentenced to one year for manslaughter after running down a small boat with his steamer, causing a death.
A March 20 fire in Bridgeport Connecticut, fueled by high winds, destroyed Abel Drew's stove shop on Gold Street and two adjoining wooden homes. Firefighters contained the blaze near the New York New Haven railroad with about fifteen families left homeless and losses around 200000 dollars, insurance pending.
In Theresa area, Bowles family escaped a blaze that consumed their farm and ruined property. Bowles died the day after while trying to save the building. Several family members suffered severe frostbite after fleeing in night clothes. Government bonds were lost in the fire. The cause remains unknown.
Three men Brown McFarlane and Caldwell fought in Tecumseh street last night over a horse race dispute. McFarlane and Caldwell beat Brown leading to his death. The assailants were arrested and jailed.
Capt James Gibbs of Mt. Vernon reports his vessel, a pungy, capsized off Plum Point in a March 4 squall. All six crew members perished, including Thomas Kelly and William Talbot of Philadelphia. Gibbs says he was aboard a nearby pungy but could not help.
The Illinois Senate approved a measure to restore burnt county records, following House approval, with an emergency clause making it effective immediately in Chicago. Weather remains extremely cold with bleak prospects for spring farming and lake navigation unlikely to resume soon. freight rates expected high. Mercury near zero tonight.
The Ohio Falls Car Works near the Indiana penitentiary in Jeffersonville was wiped out by a fire that began from a spark blew into shavings under the mill floor. Wind drove the blaze through wood construction as workers fought the flames with scant water. One man is missing and sixteen new passenger coaches were lost. The plant, insured for 199,500 dollars, had capacity for six hundred cars a month and had orders for two thousand cars.
Burlington and Council Bluffs officials exposed a ticket fraud scheme where agents sold un stamped tickets and conductors collected fares then returned them for resale. A. A. Sweringen B W Godell and C L Suydam jailed. more arrests in Council Bluffs. Also a Des Plaines Street assault left a woman scalded. bail set at 3000 dollars. Chicago relief bill passage joy and temperance law support noted. Charles Paine named General Superintendent of Lake Shore Southern railroad replacing Hatch.
A Lowell fire destroyed a building linked to Massachusetts Cotton Mills this afternoon with losses around 50 thousand dollars insured. The blaze in the Highland district also leveled nine boarding homes leaving more than a dozen families homeless.
Jersey City reports a morning fire at Henry Carroll's Glass-house on Prospect Street. The barometer rises east of the Mississippi with clear cold weather and westerly to northerly winds. The Northwest sees a fall with southerly winds extending to the Ohio valley and upper lakes. Brisk northwesterly winds will ease in New England and the Middle States. Gulf and Atlantic coasts expect no dangerous winds beyond brisk northwesterlies from Cape Hatteras northeastward.

Court of General Sessions in New York hears Mayor Hall trial. Judge Daly declares the court regular after Recorder Hackett’s ruling. Daly discharges the jury and withdraws, finding further proceedings illegal and invalid.
A 9:30 PM fire at the corner of King and Jarvis gutted a wholesale and retail grocery run by W. Strachan. The flames reached the second floor housing T. Hill & Sons printers but did not cause structural damage there. water caused most of the loss. Strachan estimates eight thousand dollars in losses, insured for five thousand.
A fire started from a defective flue at 3 this morning in Stephenson and Co. bank block Freeport Illinois. E Cronkite's grocer stock was damaged by several hundred dollars. The Bulletin office on the third floor had a narrow escape from the blaze but was saved.
In Brooklyn on March 21 the Painters Association begins a strike to win an eight hour workday and a three dollar daily wage. More than five hundred painters participate in the action to pressure employers.
