London reports Viscountess Beaconshield attacked by a sudden illness last night. Doctors feared a fatal outcome, but she rallied through the night and was much improved by morning, with danger deemed passed.
A massive blaze on a canal boat sparked a fire that spread to naptha storage and oil works at Hunter's Point across from New York City. The conflagration destroyed more than 150,000 barrels of petroleum and damaged six canal boats, four lighters, three brigs and a schooner, with a potential loss near a million dollars and over 200 workers displaced. Firefighters struggled with poor equipment as flames rose over 250 feet and drifted toward the harbor, while adjacent properties including Cole's fertilizing establishment burned. Some lives are unconfirmedly reported lost.

Joseph Gurgesell fined five dollars and costs for striking Andrew Heckler. Mary Elizabeth Craig's murder case continued to Saturday. Andy Sweeney held over to Friday for assault and rape. Charles Morton sentenced to fifty days imprisonment and thirty dollars fine for housebreaking and stealing a silver watch. James Gogings quarreled with Dan Brooks and injured him. Gogings discharged as Dan proved more guilty. William Ackermyer case for abusing a child continued to August 3. Henry Shenkle to the Workhouse for one month for stealing railroad shovels.

At eleven today a canal boat loaded with oil ignited in Hunter's Point and spread within minutes to the Standard Oil Works where 2 million barrels were stored. The blaze reached a German bark and the New York Oil Company works, with workers fleeing and a ferry-boat set ablaze. A woman and child aboard the ferry-boat are feared dead as efforts to stop the fire prove futile by 1:30 PM and panic spreads. The Flushing railroad removes cars and two new ferries nearby may be destroyed.

Coroner Underhill conducted an inquest into the death of Ace Smith this afternoon. The jury found that Smith died from injuries caused by bows from a potato digger wielded by Elizabeth Craig.
John Moran was attacked this afternoon at about three in Langdon alley by his stepson Michael Sullivan. Moran was severely cut on the head with a hatchet. Sullivan was arrested and taken to the Hammond Street Station house.
