At six this morning Nat Harris of Madison Street reported hearing a shot. He found his wife’s husband lying on the pavement in his final agony. Harris says the pistol was in his left hand and likely discharged while he cleaned it. The weapon had been loaded for a long time. A chair and tools for firearm repair were nearby.

Barton was badly burned by a powder explosion near Price and Liberty streets.
