In London on July 4 members of the House of Lords press for optional ballot secrecy while the Government pledges to test the issue in the Commons. The Queen expressed special thanks to Lords Tenterdin and Palmer for their Geneva duties. In Spain Carlist unrest flares as a 500 strong Carlist band attacks Parragona but is repulsed by the garrison.
In New York July 4 the Stokes trial spent most time on Fisk post mortem testimony. Dr Parish and Dr Fisher outlined medical details while McGowan described the shooting scene. The defense argued Fisk died from probing for the ball as prosecutors closed their medical case. The court adjourned until Friday as heat and sunstroke toll rose with 29 deaths and 50 plus cases.

Wade Hampton of Baltimore led the 2:44 race, with St Vincent Warren and Lady Suffolk Adrian among the place getters.
In Harrisburg on July 4 a fireman riding to Sunbury to attend its hundredth anniversary was killed when his head hit a bridge while the car was moving. The heat also caused multiple sun stroke deaths across the area as temperatures hit 98 degrees.
A blaze at 11 30 last night engulfed Barnes & Co cork shop. The fire also consumed McQuirk Bacon cash door and blind manufactory and several carpenters shops. Firefighters fought hard to save the block, but feared total loss.

Death of William Smith ESQ announced as a long time superintendent of the Channel of Commerce and editor of the Cincinnati Price Current. The notice notes his death occurred at his residence in the city around four this morning and that he was a well known and esteemed gentleman with many friends in the city and beyond.
A man, unnamed cart driver, was seen collapsing on Baymiller Street between Richmond and Ninth. A nearby stable's billy goat attacked him, and bystanders misread the scene. He suffered coup de soliel, was taken to Cincinnati Hospital, and died at 10:30 PM yesterday. He wore dark pants, a striped shirt, and a light felt hat.
