Japan’s Narrow Gauge Railroad Opens Thirteen Miles

From Yokohama June 2 1872 a New York Herald correspondent reports the Nippon railroad progress revealing a three foot six inch gauge line reaching thirteen miles. The line cost about 120000 dollars per mile with cars for four classes though travel remains rough yet improving. Officials crowd each train and fares are high but expected to drop next month. Projections place full line reach to Jeddo by early 1874 amid delays and scrutiny of funds.

Insurgent threat and a comical well digger occurrence

Havana reports insurgents massing near Cinco Villas for an assault while an Irish worker named Pat devised a prank. He hid in bushes in a sunken well after digging to about twenty five feet and fakeed his death, reappearing only after brick and earth were cleared, prompting laughter among nearby diggers.

Fortune Lost and Found in Pittsburg Ward Lands

A 19th century tale traces a stubborn landowner who refused a $5 doctor’s bill, lost a 50 acre Monongahela tract to sheriff sale, and saw it rise in value to $60,000 then over $100,000 under new owners. The piece contrasts this with women’s unpaid labor and argues housekeeping can be a valued, varied profession.
