In Geneva on August 28 the Court of Arbitration has awarded the American government 380000 pounds in damages exclusive of interest. Several members reportedly oppose granting interest, and the final decision on this point remains unsettled.
Early yesterday in New York a bartender Jos Ballard was beaten with a bottle and kicked by two roughs D Lacy and Joseph McDonald and taken to hospital in a dying condition. Bridget Claw died mysteriously with husband arrested for murder. A man Peter Ward stabbed Thos Kilighan in the throat and a boy Peter Carrigan fired at John Hart in the Evening Express office. A tailor Stephen Steer fatally injured by a fall from a third story window and John Leonard killed in an elevator fall. The Waldorf creditors and Woodhull & Claflin faced court proceedings and asylum hooks. A ten thousand dollar bet on Greeley’s election was claimed at Saratoga. The Staten Island line sale yielded $46,000 for the steamer Westfield and $399,000 for other assets. The Mayor of Yeddo visited City Hall. the Japanese depart for Europe tomorrow. A tugboat George Ward sunk at Commercial wharf with one man missing. Apollo Hall Democrats met with Judge Spaulding as chair.
Reports detail a convention in Louisville with gates and alternates, and resolutions instructing delegates to vote straight for Charles O Connor. Local New York Workingmen’s General Council endorsed Greeley and Brown, with five delegates from each assembly present led by J Kane.
A young man named Peter Benel was fatally stabbed last night by Frederick De Croft who fled toward Baltimore and remains at large. Private letters from Louisiana hope for a speedy settlement of the Republican dispute. Southern cotton reports note insect ravages and a plan to import terriers from Central America for pest control. Public debt reductions and pension payments this month are recorded, with various Navy and Army orders and resignations noted.
The Board of Public Works clashed with the Washington & Georgetown railroad over rail resetting and paving on Capitol Hill and Seventh Street with police prepared for disturbances. The railroad protested the Board’s actions and will seek court review of its charter rights. Also, T Crosby named chief clerk of the War Department. Early returns from Parkersburg show Jacob leading in the First District by about 1 380 votes and by 2 260 in the Second District while Camden leads in the Third by about 2 600. Statewide Jacob’s margin unlikely to exceed 1 000. Republicans concede the Constitution ratification but the margin is still unclear.
An express train collided with a freight train near Jersey City injuring H L Ostrander who required amputation after a leg injury. A liquor car burned, valued at about $10000. Rev James Roosevelt Bayley was appointed Archbishop of Baltimore and Newark plans show a cathedral project valued over a million dollars.
Northerly and north easterly winds and generally clear weather will prevail in New England and the Middle States. The South east of the Mississippi will see clear skies while the northwest experiences increasing clouds and likely rain. The outlook extends eastward over the upper lake region toward the lower Ohio Valley with easterly and southerly winds.
The bulletin reports Grand Duke Nicholas of Prussia arriving in Berlin, and President and officials in Washington with a cabinet meeting likely. local items include fire on Central avenue, a boy injured by a hay wagon on Elm street, a melee at Republican headquarters, a liquor case trial set for September 6, and sentencing in a saloon robbery case with Whitmore cited for prior contempt.
Dayton Kentucky city council meets at Ehmer's hall with most members present. Salary for patrol commissioner set at 2 per day. Berry bond sent to City Attorney. Streets committee to inspect curbing on new streets and mark nonconforming stones for contractor corrections before final exam. Kenton street sewer referred to Streets and Finances committees. Bills totaling 27704 approved. clerk to issue payment orders. Building Association No 1 to meet at Ehmer's Hall this evening and sell several shares.
Reported to 1:00 P. M. Wednesday August 28, prices for leading articles showed local demand for top grades. Wheat rose about 5 cents with scarce high grade offerings, corn quiet with mixed cars at 45 to 48 cents, oats steady, rye steady, pork and lard unchanged, hogs receipts larger with steady demand, flour and whiskey sales noted with various lots and prices.
At about 7 PM a New York train moving toward Philadelphia struck a carriage at Tacony crossing. John W. Middleton his wife and two daughters were killed along with the coachman as the carriage was demolished.
An express train on the Camden and Amboy line bound for Philadelphia collided with a freight train one and a half miles from town at noon. Three freight cars telescoped the express, the engine wrecked, and a liquor car burned. Loss estimated at 10000 dollars. Two men injured. A brief fire near Central avenue and Baymiller street was quickly put out after about 3 30 pm. Henry Schillinger, Assistant Market Master, was arrested for throwing a beer glass at a Moerlein beer wagon driver.
Clarence Laird to T C Camll transfers 90 foot by 108 foot parcel on Clinton street. John Smith and wife to Rev P Guilfoyle 25 by 50 foot lot on Richmond street. James Entwistle to Willi Jelahanty 18 by 83 feet on New street. William Mueller to Franz Boege 9 feet on Vineeee Street north of Mulberry. J M Walden and wife to A L Metz of an acre on Turnpike in Madisonville for 3000 dollars.
A telegram directed the L. C. & L. depot watchman to detain Fred Sampson, a twelve year old runaway arriving on the 9 45 train from Richmond Indiana. He stayed at the Third street Station house then to the Mayor, and was later returned home by his stern parent for discipline.
Coroner Underhill held an inquest this afternoon on Euphemia Phillips who died suddenly this morning at a house on the Montgomery pike beyond the Garden of Eden. She had complained of a head ache for a day, could hardly speak by evening, and died before a physician could arrive. The twenty year old native of Scotland was judged to have died from brain disease by the jury.
Market briefs out of New York New Orleans and Chicago show mixed activity. Wheat firm at 155 156 red 155 amber 155 16 wax, corn quiet but steady, pork dull lard firmer, whisky nominal, sugar in fair demand. Receipts and shipments listed. In New Orleans flour and corn notes, oats and hay demand, bacon and lard prices, and whiskey totals appear. Later reports show wheat at 114 for September and various receipts. A stray note mentions China archives and a Memphis death.
