Also reported: L W Wallace denies robbery charges after returning from the country, McVicker's Theater opening draws crowds, the Chicago Directory lists 126 174 names implying a 440 000 population, and various political nominations and a Des Barer meeting are noted with scattered details.
Mont Pepper, longtime figure associated with the Commercial News depot of the West, is noted in an August report from MEmMPxis, Tennessee, dated August 16. He maintained strong ties to the local press and business community.
Telegram from Slatte Ty reports Cordelia of Windsor Nova Scotia ran ashore at Halifax on the 12th in a dangerous position. Crew saved. Captain Sheppard of the Lark says Harriet Amelia spoke off Bean Harbor en route from Portland to tou. Captain John Cochrane of the Harriet Amelia jumped overboard and drowned.
In Baltimore Barary on August 6 a lightning bolt struck a large tree near a picnic gathering at Druid Hall Park. About thirteen people were injured including several ladies knocked down and badly burned. One young woman was rendered insensible for hours while several gentlemen suffered burns and other injuries.
The Pennsylvania, the first new steamship to operate between Philadelphia and Europe, was launched yesterday morning at Crampton's yards. About 50 000 people attended, including leading citizens and state and city officials.
A severe storm passed over Providence at 4 am, bringing rain of half an inch. Lightning struck in several places, prostrating people and damaging houses, and a horse was killed in one incident.
In Buffalo on August 16 a Superior Court motion for a new trial for John Geffrey, sentenced to be hung on September 11, was denied by the judges. This leaves only a shadow of hope for the condemned man.
Frederick Cole of Buffalo, son of George W. Cole, died yesterday afternoon at the Spencer House by taking poison in an apparent self inflected death.
Washington August 15 7 30 P M Northerly winds and clear weather prevail Friday over New England and Middle States. Easterly to southerly winds with cloudy weather and rain threaten South Atlantic States. Clear weather and light winds extend from Eastern Texas to Alabama and north to Ohio Lower Michigan and Illinois. From Lower Missouri valley to the Lakes Michigan and Superior winds turn southerly to southeasterly with increasing cloudiness and likely threatening weather and falling barometer.
The steamship Pennsylvania was launched in Philadelphia yesterday as the first vessel for the new Liverpool line from that port. In Memphis Mont Pepper, ex Western Union manager and Common Council member turned planter in Arkansas, died of congestion at the Orsham House. Fort Garry reports Portage La Prairie natives refused annuity payments, threatening to halt surveys without better terms. In Titusville creditors of Fisher Bros. oil dealers showed generosity as $200,000 in contracts were canceled, leaving liabilities about five thousand dollars beyond assets. Urban camp meeting ended yesterday and Ku Klux pardons, urged by Colonel Whitley, were issued. Yellow fever aboard several vessels reaching Leanne City prompted health concerns. Ohio District 11 Democratic Convention nominated R. R. Hudson of Meigs for Congress. In Pittsburg, James Downey was found dead by suicide in a coroner's inquest. Two men named eel and K were arrested on suspicion and held for a hearing next Thursday. Goldsmith Maid and others arrived in Milwaukee for races starting at Cold Spring on the 20th. A man named Stickney died near Atchison after a fall into a pool.
E V Smally of the New York Tribune and W J Patton of the Little Rock Journal returned to Little Rock from Russellville where they studied reported militia outrages. A large countywide mass meeting adopted strong resolutions for peace and opposing martial law with delegates present from all parts of the county. Neither militia nor citizens are in arms and Dover’s Gen Bishop praised local conduct. Major Daniel Gano, a longtime resident, recently broke an arm in a fall.
A waif, a fine bouncing boy in a basket, was found on the doorsteps of ex Assistant Recorder Geo Thayer at 241 Laurel street and sent to the Orphan Asylum. Paul DeRuyter Co. fruit dealers at 53 Vine street made a voluntary assignment for the benefit of creditors with liabilities around 66 000 and assets near 30 000. Kennedy chosen assignee at the meeting.
John Dunham a brakesman on a Marietta and Cincinnati freight line was struck by the Loveland Accommod ation train at Oakley this morning. His arm fractured he is treated by Dr Mount at Madisonville and later admitted to Cincinnati Hospital. John Netfield an agent for Wheeler and Wilson Sewing Machine Company was arrested for embezzling funds collected for the company and jailed at Bremen Street Station awaiting examination.

Fleur old family goods and various lots sold at reported prices. oats and whisky volumes listed. bacon and rib sides sold with firm tone. several bushels and boxes noted with prices and quantities.

Commodity prices show mixed signals with wheat near 125 and 117 3/8 per bushel, corn steady, oats dull, and flour around 141. Local markets list barrel and bushel measurements for wheat, corn, and oats with values and terms.
Report from Paris suggests a Berlin arranged meeting by Bismarck to form a European peace league. In fact the aim is a three power league led by Germany against France, according to well informed circles.

On August 14 at 3 A M in Ashland Pennsylvania several Gorrel and Audenried mine workers were fired on by a Molly Maguires ambush in nearby woods. Three men were seriously injured while the assailants escaped into the night.
