In Chicago on August 3, authorities know little about Steiner's location. Speculation runs high with no solid lead. It is stated Steiner did not steal as much as first claimed, and Steiner Wyndham accounts show adequate funds at Manufacturers' Bank to cover the French Band.

ATLANTA July 3 J By Lloyd a Floyd county delegate to the State Convention declares for Grant. He says the Convention wise to discard the Cincinnati and Baltimore Conventions and should have repudiated Horace Greeley. He adds we gain nothing from Greeley and lose much, affirming Grant as a soldier and a gentleman.
Weather report from Washington notes a slow eastward movement of a low barometer north of Virginia bringing south and east winds. Expect partly cloudy and cool weather with occasional light rain along the New England coast, then clearing. Northerly winds prevail from Iowa to Lake Ontario and through the Mississippi and Ohio valleys with clear, cool skies.
London reports seventeen thousand emigrants left Liverpool for America in July. Paris notes Le Temps questions the authenticity of Stanley letters, quoting a geographer who points to geographical errors and suggests Stanley may have invented parts of the narrative, casting doubt on the entire story and Livingston connection.
Early morning blaze in the law office of E. P. Cranch at No. 213 West Third street, caused by a defective flue from a basement restaurant, destroyed many rare two century old law books. Loss estimated at $1,000 without insurance.
An infant girl Annie Schunder, twenty months old, died after climbing to a wash boiler in the kitchen while Mrs. John Schunder was washing in the hall. Hot rinsing water spilled over her, causing severe burns and death within hours.

A young man named A. H. Baker posed as a clerk for W. A. Seiter & Co. and obtained goods from several retailers. He stole a diamond pin valued at $100 from Lange & Bro but claimed to be customers’ representative. Lange & Bro alerted Baker’s fraud, and he was arrested on the charge of obtaining goods under false pretenses.
Wm Audier and Geo Deitz faced Judge Carter on charges of keeping a disorderly house. Defense by Paul Schuster and Judge Saffin. Witnesses argued over noise and conduct. Judge Carter indicated no ordinance violation and discharged the defendants.
