Genéral B C sid Rodos States Minister to Great Britain travels to Paris as a conference occurs among Caleb Cushing William Evarts and Bancroft Davis regarding the American case before the Geneva Board. Galena reports the Chas Rogers as the season’s first steamboat reaching port from Savannah, with Willie Wilson from Bellevue. Jamestown voters rejected funding a Moneta to Dubuque railroad by 180 to 50. Cerebrospinal meningitis cases appear as temperatures drop. Jo Daviess Supervisors race tilts toward eleven Democrats and twelve Republicans with one town still uncertain.

The Short Line Railroad Company now owns all ground on the east side of Saratoga street between Madison and Jefferson after purchasing three more lots. They plan a substantial freight and passenger depot on this square. Newport has six large hotels: the Barlow House Caldwell House Patterson street House Washington Flouse Star Tavern and Brutch's.
