Descriptive clippings report fires in Roosevelt residence and in Philadelphia and Dover shops, a painters strike in Brooklyn, a workingmen’s strike in Toronto, and a fatal self-inflicted act by a Chicago merchant. Other items note an Episcopal church dispute in Chicago and a fatal affray in Kappa Illinois.
One hundred recruits from Newport Barracks were ordered to Kit Garson California to reinforce the Fifteenth Infantry. Also reported are arrangements for presenting the new Spanish Minister at noon and a transmission to Congress of long correspondence with Great Britain on lighthouse dues. Secretary Boutwell urged a bill offering an exchange of National Bank coupons for 4.4% bonds, with banks retaining exchange rights through January.
A Roosevelt family residence in Flushing burned causing $10,000 loss. A seaman named Charles Williams was found murdered on Roosevelt Street. two suspects were arrested. The Erie railroad offered to pay 75 cents on the dollar to settle debts of the New York and Boston express company, a deal accepted by creditors.
A blaze at the Knickerbocker ice company's stables at Master and America streets killed twenty horses and fourteen mules and burned thirty new wagons and harness. Two frame houses behind the stable were destroyed. Loss estimated near 2,000 with 2,500 insured per last report.
Isaac C Day a Day Allen Co senior and prominent grocer died by suicide at his Michigan avenue residence amid despondency after a great fire. He left a substantial estate though worried he would end in poverty. The report notes his wife and daughter found him after a pistol shot. The same paper reports labor strikes by boot and shoe workers seeking a two dollar daily raise with about one thousand men involved. Also mentions new Japanese students arriving in three weeks to study in Chicago and a church dispute at Christ Church led by Rev Charles Cheney as vestry opposition grows.
In LaSalle Joseph Quince aged sixteen, a mill worker, fell into a revolving flywheel pit while sleepwalking. He suffered a crushed shoulder a head wound and internal injuries feared fatal as the engine was stopped. In Bloomington a man named John Crowe was stabbed to death near Kappa ten miles north of the city and Abner Allen attempted to kill two others afterward.
In Canada Toronto a meeting of employees held before last to organize against the Nine-hour move. A large mass meeting of workingmen supported the Nine-hour measure with a packed hall of mechanics. Rumor says the Typographical Union resents aid from the Leader and plans a paper to counter disorganization amid member idleness. Grand jury indicts Hugh Caldwell and James McFarlane for the murder of the late George Brown.
Milwaukee News asserts that a claim of treasury bankruptcy is false based on quarterly statements showing $864,683 in the treasury. It notes Republican gains in city election returns and reports weather moderation with snow nearly gone.
The Donald, sent to aid the Australian Mohengo, returned to San Francisco with a damaged smokestack and lost boat after a heavy gale sixty miles southeast of the Faralleone Islands. The Mohengo reports rough seas and a blown steam chest, while the Saranac is still at sea and the Mohengo will resume voyage to Australia on Friday.
The April 5 dispatch from New Orleans reports a very desperate civil war in Mexico. It lists commanders Alatone Rocha Palacio Corella Porfirio Trevino Garcia de la Cardena Neri Negrete Donati Guerra as top generals aligned with the revolutionaries helping secure recent gains after Zacatecas.
In Dover on April 5 a blaze consumed the Morris and Essex railroad car shops. Four passenger cars one baggage car and two cabooses burned. Loss estimated at seventy thousand dollars with no insurance. Paint shop origin. many workers left jobless.
The Northern Line Packet Company's new steamer Clinton was successfully launched yesterday in St. Louis. The vessel is praised as the finest ever built for the St. Louis and St. Paul trade by a large gathering of citizens.

John Gallagher appeared before the Police Court on March 28 charged with assault and shooting at Barney Macke with intent to kill. Evidence shows a street quarrel after perceived provocation, Gallagher fired three to four shots, but the foreman testified to Gallagher's good character. Gallagher was bound over on his recognizance.
A fire at the East Walnut Hills Omnibus Stables near Linwood road and the Madison turnpike destroyed a stable and feed estimated at 2000 dollars, with 500 dollars insured.
