Washington and Mount Vernon July Fourth narrative traces Wilson's insistence that the world fight autocracy and militarism. Washington reports twenty three American expeditionary forces casualties. Five killed in action seven died of wounds two died from diseases one due to accident and other causes three wounded severely and five missing in action. Officers named include Lieut A Mortimer Van Ostrand Lewiston Idaho and Lieut Leonidas B Faulk Monroe. Washington sources say a forthcoming defined policy toward Russia is likely after President Wilson gave only a brief nod to the issue. A Russian commission is expected to be formed to work with Ambassador Francis and support anti-German forces, as famine and exploitation under German control intensify across the country.
Bridgeport June 5 Governor Marcus H Holcomb told thousands of munition workers at a Fourth of July parade that if possible no enemy alien man or woman should remain on these shores. He praised loyal natives and foreigners, declared no greetings for disloyal foreigners, and said the United States has the Kaiser on the run and would keep him going. He noted Connecticut has contributed 45 000 men to the army including some among its first combat troops in France.
Connecticut merchants rush to secure food administration licenses to buy eggs and poultry for non retail sale. A special form covers the rush while regular forms are issued. Current license holders for eggs and poultry need not obtain a new license.
Ex congressman Thomas L. Reilly of Meriden was nominated for sheriff of New Haven County by a 71 to 36 vote over Thomas Ahern of New Haven at the Democratic county convention in R. of hall. James Smith of Ansonia received 18 votes, and Reilly won on the first ballot.

Washington July 5 The Bay State Street Railway Company of Massachusetts filed with the Interstate Commerce Commission for a 25 percent increase in class and commodity rates.
American troops celebrated Independence Day in France with a quiet Fourth across all sectors. General Pershing greeted French officials, praised the city as a corner of America, and reaffirmed the shared fight for liberty. He thanked God for the existence of allied ties and cited Fo ch praise.
Amsterdam reports Mohammed V sultan of Turkey died at 7 o clock Wednesday night. He was the 35th sovereign, rose to the throne on April 2 1909 after 38 years as a prisoner in the palace, a coup by parliament ousting Abdul II and placing Mohammed V on the throne.

William L Dickinson a founder and former president of the Massachusetts highway association and longtime superintendent of highways in Springfield died at his home yesterday at age 69. A native of the city he shaped highway policy and construction, improving conditions across the region.
A cablegram to the Norwegian legation reports twenty Norwegian vessels totaling 26,833 gross tons sunk in June. Thirty one sailors are listed as missing and presumed dead, reflecting heavy maritime losses during the month.
