Excursion boat sinks killing many on river trip
A Peoria incident report states about 150 people drowned after the Columbia, a large flat bottom excursion boat chartered by Pekin's South Side Social Club, sank in fog on the Illinois River near Wesley City. Revelers, hundreds rescued, officials feared higher toll as bodies were recovered and survivors treated in Peoria and Pekin hospitals.

Portland Soldier Payne Dies Overseas in France
Lyman Hamlin Payne of the Medical Department AEF died in France from pleurisy and broncho pneumonia. He was 23, born May 20, 1893, son of Ly man Payne of Portland, a music dealer. He enlisted in the Ambulance corps and trained at Fort Ethan Allen. He leaves a large family and is the fifth Portland boy to die in World War I. Others from Portland who died include Joseph T. Fitzgerald, R. Leslie Hughes, Dudley Marsh, and Timothy Callaghan.

Hartford July 8 Connecticut reports sixty five towns launching a child welfare drive to cut infant mortality and improve health. Portland was first to complete weighing and measuring, New Haven counts about 14 000 babies weighed, and physicians foresee roughly 3 000 needing medical attention to correct defects.

American Air Victory Over German Forces in France
American airmen fought over the Marne front on Friday driving back three German planes. An American was attacked by two Albatross fighters but continued his recon mission amid combat. New York July 5 Birchet Kit Clarke longtime fishing companion of Grover Cleveland and Joseph Jefferson and known as the dean of American theatrical press agents died yesterday at his Brooklyn home aged 85. He originated alliterative advertising and was publicity man for Haverly's minstrels during a two year run at Drury Lane Theatre in London.

Tank Corps Enlistment Comes to Hartford on July 18
Lieutenant John R. MacMillan will visit Hartford July 18 to recruit for the tank corps. He will meet prospects at Leo A. Korper’s office, State Capitol, Room 25, for one or two days. Connecticut has already supplied over 100 men to the tank corps, with the unit seeking red-blooded two fisted volunteers willing to fight on the front lines.
