Why Butter and Egg Prices Are High
Chicago January 15 storage butter and eggs are scarce yet fresh products are available at lower prices. Storage butter stands under 5 million pounds versus 50 million normally and eggs have fallen to 50 thousand cases from 250 to 300 thousand. Officials say few hold storage butter or eggs and will not sell outside their trade as they save for loyal customers. Government stockpiling for the army drives the shortage, though favorable weather has boosted fresh supplies and helped prices drop.
