Four aviators leaped from a runaway dirigible off Cape Cod at Orleans Mass on January 14. The airship, after leaving Chatham Naval Air Station for a practice trip, became unmanageable and drifted toward the Orleans shores. Rep James A Gallivan of Massachusetts charged in the house that national guard divisions abroad were harassed by regular army officers. He said General Clarence R Edwards was relieved as commander of the New England division after being pressured to remove guard officers, claiming the regulars bullied him into leaving.
Waterbury January 14 John Winters of Beacon Falls was sentenced to six months in jail after pleading guilty to assault with intent to kill the charge having been changed from attempt to murder Winters had recently figured in a sensational Beacon Falls shooting in which he fired four bullets into his wife and two into himself Attorney John R Booth of New Haven represented Winters in superior court
J Nathaniel Glass of Sound Beach was fined ten dollars in Stamford city court after making disrespectful remarks about President Woodrow Wilson. Four men in a hotel discussion reported that Glass called the president a dirty dog while his name was mentioned, the court noting liquor influence limited the penalty.
The last season’s voyage of the Hartford and New York Transportation steamers is set for Wednesday evening. Harsh cold has made it difficult to keep the river open, ending the service for now.

Washington reports that British expeditionary forces have landed at Riga and met Bolshevik forces in combat, while Estonian troops hold a Valge river line aided by armored trains. Lithuanian press says Vilna captured by Bolsheviks but advance checked and government moved to Koyno.
London January 14 Lloyds reports the American steamship Yuma bound from New York with a sugar cargo has been lost at sea. The captain and portion of the crew were saved with others missing.
The Yuma a vessel of 1685 tons was formerly a German ship but was requisitioned by the United States government.
Stockholm Jan 14 peasants in Vladimir and Nizhni Novgorod districts have revolted and burned many houses with occupants amid reports of armed Bolsheviks spreading unrest across the region.
Rockland Me January 14 state of alarm after another attempted assault on a young woman with a club near the murder scene of December 31. Miss Myrlie Young 19 dodged a blow and fled as her father pursued the attacker toward the water front. A police citizen posse searched all night without success. Frank S Mansfield, linked to the Mrs Small assault, has an alibi.
Washington January 14 Senator France of Maryland offers a resolution urging a speedy peace with the central powers and withdrawal of American troops from foreign soil as soon as practicable. It calls for postponing all questions not directly involved in peace negotiations until after two international conferences following the treaty. The measure argues occupation armies cause vast expense and unrest, offering no productive use of funds for civilians.
John Densmore, head of the United States Employment Service, told the House immigration committee that unemployment must be prevented by gradual cancellation of wartime contracts. George R. Sheldon former treasurer of the Republican National Committee and notable financier died in Carbondale Illinois after injuries from an automobile collision. Born Brooklyn April 16 1857 he graduated Harvard in 1879 and built a banking career serving as director of several railroads and other firms. He was a delegate to the 1900 Republican convention and treasurer of the New York state committee in 1906 and of the national committee from 1906 to 1916.
Judge W H Lamar, solicitor for the Post Office and a wire control official, told the House Post Office committee that the Moon resolution extending government control of telegraph and telephone lines does not mandate government ownership. The draft merely envisions gathering data for Congress to study future developments in wire systems.

Springfield Jan. 14. The Illinois house approved the federal prohibition amendment by 84 to 66, completing the state’s ratification after the senate signaled approval last week. Illinois becomes the 26th ratifying state.

Miss Susan D. Keefe daughter of Mr and Mrs Peter Keefe of Stevenson and Joseph O Kelly of Stamford were married at St Marys church Derby by Rev Pp F Fitzgerald. Mrs Kelly a St Vincents alumna and New Haven normal school graduate, has practiced law at Chattanooga. Mr Kelly is assistant superintendent of Connecticut Light and Power Co building a dam at Stevenson. They will reside in Stevenson.
State Master F. B. Blakeman opened three day sessions in Hartford outlining the Connecticut Grange’s yearly plan and noting the group’s work in support of the dry amendment. Delegates from across the state attended as the meeting began.
A fire erupted today at the six story block at 156 Washington street in New Britain endangering more than 60 occupants as they fled the blaze. The loss was estimated at $1,000.
