Reports from London and Washington describe the loss of 440 American soldiers when the transport Otranto sank after a collision with the Kashmier off the Scottish coast. Over 200 bodies were recovered as the tragedy prompted war time dispatches.
President Wilson marched with an American division on Seventy second street to the Liberty Day observance. A man led police and secret service to a street confrontation, but the president remained unperturbed as authorities detained the suspect, EF H J Noone, who claimed no harm.
The issue notes Liberty Day marking America’s discovery anniversary and a government push to sell Liberty bonds. It mentions holiday bank closings and a national war effort. Paris reports progress on the Champagne front with railway towns captured and advances along the Pauvres to Vousieres line.
Funeral services for Berial Carr were held at City Cemetery at nine this morning with H W Lowrey presiding. A brief service included selections from the Bible and a prayer as the small group gathered. Flowers covered the casket and pallbearers included T K Williams J R Linn C C Lewis and L A Swigart. Jack Gaither was in town from the Rightway hotel.
Mrs Laura M Beers an old subscriber of Curr who had been in Topeka Kansas for the summer will leave there Monday for Burton Kansas Carlin friends hoped for a visit this winter but do not yet know if their hopes will be realised.
Mrs Mothel BE Polk spent the week at the John Barber ranch with Mrs Barber and the children last Monday. They plan to stay at Porterville until schools reopen.
No official notice confirms the fact but it is said war relief trains will skip Carlsbad next Wednesday due to health conditions. Authorities advise avoiding crowds during the preepidemic period.
