AP report from Duluth dated Oct 14 describes a massive forest fire across northeastern Minnesota. Hundreds dead and thousands homeless with losses in the millions, centered on Moose and Lake Kettle rivers and Cloquet, with a dozen cities destroyed.
Washington Oct. 14 Associated Press report notes Senator Moore of Indiana reiterates that the American people will accept nothing less than unconditional surrender from Germany. Senator Thomas introduces a peace resolution rejecting self government rights for Slavonia and Poland.
German chancellor Maximilian is reported to resign with retirement seen as likely by Berlin sources. Britain opposes an armistice unless Germany offers reciprocal military and naval guarantees. Reuters notes no prospect of early peace.
Washington reports that Italian public sentiment supports the allies pace principles but holds independent views on interest. British and Belgian forces attack in Flanders near Ghent with Courtrai seen as key to General Foch. The remains of Sam Carder, a well known local figure, who died about two weeks ago at Camp Dix New Jersey, will be shipped to a Texas burial point per word received by relatives here.
Families wishing to send Christmas presents to men overseas should contact Mrs. Ho F P Chris tion, secretary of the Red Cross. The Red Cross provides cartons up to three pounds and requires a soldier's authorization to deliver the carton. Limited cartons available before supply is exhausted.
