Thousands of American fighting men encamped in France await their place in the trenches beside seasoned allies. The unit would cooperate with the Allied forces and may serve as a connecting link between French and British armies as campaigns dictate.
Washington officials report a general coal price cut at the mines of one dollar to one dollar and a half per ton. Operators cite cost investigations and expect further decreases. The move could lower government costs and save hundreds of millions for the American people.
Eddy County New Mexico commissioners meet for protest against land levies under the States Reclamation Service Carlsbad Project. The board denies the protest and spends the day reviewing tax renditions with property owner consent. A second session holds equalization, hearing complaints and examining renditions before adjournment to June 7, 1917.
June 28 report from Washington describes Canadian troops storming the German front line before Avion, a Lana suburb, under heavy artillery fire. The action is part of ongoing Allied operations in the region.

Miss Theela Gerke twenty two of Woosockett South was shot and killed by an unknown assailant while heading to a friend's home. Police pursue lead as investigation continues. In Washington a separate note reports a call for the federal trade commission to justify delays in newsprint reform and price controls, urged by Mrs Walter Ralph.
Officials report the board spent the day examining and approving the tax renditions while adjusting them to meet property owner requests.
