American troops north of Chateau-Thierry repelled a German attack at midnight using machine guns and rifles. The fighting raged with fierce counterfire and reports say the Americans killed over one hundred enemy soldiers in a brutal engagement.
General Pershing personally directed American troops in the Cantigny fight, driving German forces from the village after its May 28 capture. German attempts to retake Cantigny failed, with about two hundred prisoners reported. A Dutch coast clash saw five British and seven German seaplanes engage off Terschelling. One German machine burned, one British plane forced down.
French forces pushed from Chesy toward Dammard and reached its western edge, as the war office reported. South of Venilly La Poterie German attacks on Houreschem Le Thiolet front were repulsed with heavy losses.
French American forces secured a breakthrough in the Venilly La Poterie and Houresches sector as a second attack in France achieved an Allied advance. The operation continued yesterday with a further northwest push into the Chezy sector along the line.
A Moscow communication delivered to President Wilken from the American Chamber of Commerce session in Moscow calls for total victory over Germany and credits allied economic aid with rebuilding Russia. An Atlantic Port notes an American freighter returning to port after submarine pursuit.
J. M. Tulk arrived back Thursday from his Lovington area ranch and leaves today for the return trip. He notes a fine rain that filled lakes and water holes, benefiting farmers and stockmen. Sheep on the ranch are doing well with shearing expected to begin early next week.
Washington reports Allied pressure against German lines northwest of Chateau-Thierry continuing with no sign of slackening. The front has shifted with the line astride the Clignon river as advances north and west push the Germans back. French and American units reportedly repelled two German attacks with heavy losses, while American marines remain engaged near Boures and Thiolet, indicating a widening wedge east of Hanteveanes.
The Nelson family departed Lakewood this morning for Miami Arizona as they plan to make the Arizona city their future home. A dance at the Armory last night was a successful affair with fine music a good floor and a large crowd showing interest in honoree Joe Reever. The young man in one of the mechanics leaves tonight.
Carlsbad New Mexico weather bulletin notes thunder showers in the east portion tonight with little change in temperatures and generally unsettled conditions for the period ahead.
The German lines north of Clige and the Gere retirement near Chigy and Dommuard may have rapid acceleration due to press from the advancing Allied forces.
Hathield and Mise Inex and O McKeen and sons from Malaga join the mechanical division of the army. Gardner, a former resident of Carlsbad, is already enlisted. Both young men are well known and have many friends in the county who wish them well as they depart from among us.
Mrs. George Price and her son Leland will leave tonight for a visit to Iola Uiger in St. Louis and other points in Missouri and Cincinnati.
