A rabbit drive south of town organized by A M Parrott and neighbors killed about six hundred rabbits. A 60 foot square corral, 40 rod wings, and a large crowd aided the effort. Photographer Griffin recorded views but rabbits were slain quickly. Next drive planned at J J Smith's home with hopes to curb crop and fruit tree damage.
A list of homestead filings names several claimants including Rolla R Wynn of Mountainair sections 1 and 12, 4, 6 Samuel M Shaw of McIntosh section 10, 7 Ascencion Sanchez of Pinos Wells section 2,2,11 Elaudebra Labrada of Pinos Wells sections 25 and 26, 3,11 Pablo Martinez of Pinos Wells sections 25 and 23, 3,11 Robert C Wagner of West Liberty Iowa section 24,8,8 Nola Rayburn of Middleton I see 17.
A shooting at J. I. Byrd's sawmill above Torreon injures a Mexican laborer grazed in the face after a plan to move a participant from danger failed. The incident arose from alleged advances to G. W. Ford's wife as Ford pursued the worker with a gun.
Estancia Commercial Club last Tuesday ratified officers to run this year's Torrance County Fair. Wm McIntosh presides with R N Maxwell vice president J I Rawson secretary and J F Lasater treasurer. An executive committee includes E W Roberson M B Atkinson J A Tarr to organize dates funds grounds and buildings.
Word reached in Estancia that Acasio Gallegos residence just west of Torreon burned to the ground on Wednesday. He had been in Albuquerque with his family and, on return, found the house ashes. He suspects foul play and is aiding crews to identify possible perpetrators.
At the Dow home in Estancia a ceremony united Dora Dow daughter of Milton Dow with Leonard J Adams formerly of Albany New York a Estancia merchant. The wedding march was played by Gertrude Kelly and Rev W A Pratt officiated a church reception followed. The bridal party then left by train to Albuquerque for a short honeymoon. A christening for Estella Catherine Rose accompanied the day.
Dr J A Massie president of the New Mexico Board of Health visited Estancia this week to supervise sanitation. He ordered cleanup of yards alleys and surface wells and instructed filling underground cess pools and installing scavenger boxes. He warns shallow wells risk typhoid from contaminated rains and urges immediate action.
The piece denounces Gov Hagerman's ouster as a blow to good government and accuses the Republican party machine in the territory of corruption. It compares the Hagerman removal to infamous political gangs, arguing that honest officials are discarded by a brutal faction. The author insists the merits of Curry or any incoming governor do not absolve the harm done.
