The week has been notably cooler. Everett Green and family from Lincoln visited Diller relatives Saturday. The wheat meeting planned for Tuesday night was postponed to tonight.
Ingalshede community notes that Harry Walker of Wood Studio underwent appendicitis surgery at Odell hospital on Thursday of last week and was reported to be progressing well.
Mr Ed Best has returned to Atchison Kansas and is assured his position with the Missouri Pacific railroad will be open for him under the NRA program.
Veil Green Paul Zeleny Ira Casper and George Ball went to Hemingford to help harvest potatoes and returned Monday without finding as much work as they expected.
Mrs J H Kuper living with her son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Harry Baker near Diller received a major ovation Wednesday in a Beatrice hospital. Drs A F and E E Steffen and their wives attended Ruth Steffen’s funeral in Fairbury and then visited relatives in Beatrice.
Nancy Robertson and tenor Lela joined Mr and Mrs Chas E Waggoner for a drive to Worthington Minnesota last week to visit their daughter Mrs E F Habicht and her husband and their son Lynn Waggoner who is working in Mr Habicht s store They returned home Tuesday evening.
Jefferson County wheat growers must file applications to reduce acreage under the Triple A wheat plan by Monday September 25. All-wheat contracts go to Washington by December 1. About 60 percent of county wheat acreage is signed up and the first County Board meeting is set for Saturday at the Court House.
Weather notes say recent rains improve pastures and farming after winter. a few lines mention sowing timing and ground condition for seeding. A baby of Morris Highly sick but improving is reported. Diller band invited to perform at Jefferson County Fair in Fairbury.
J A Cully of Beatrice and his daughter Grace attended the Century of Progress exposition in Chicago. He spent the weekend with his son H Cully and family, Mr and Mrs John Wrigley as guests at a birthday dinner for Mrs Carrie Wrigley.
Mr and Mrs DeVere Hale and their son Richard Verdell of Brush Colorado visited Monday at the home of her parents Mr and Mrs Fred Frisbie and family with other Diller relatives and friends.
Paul Stange had a serious operation Monday at Lincoln General Hospital. He had gone there last week with Eugene Weigel and is expected to recover if no complications arise.
Merle Johnson of Co.762 CCC stationed at Chadron Nebr returned on furlough Friday and stayed until Wednesday with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Frank Johnson. He seems pleased with camp life and plans to reenlist for six more months.
Mattie Henrichs and Gertrude Schrader from the Lutheran Sanitarium and Hospital at Hot Springs South Dakota stopped Friday at the home of Mattie’s parents Mr and Mrs Fred Henrichs en route to Milwaukee Wisconsin for the American Convention this week. They will also go to Chicago to attend the Century of Jess Exposition.
clipping from Orange County reports a Jefferson County Nebr. reunion held in an Orange County park. About 80 former Jefferson residents attended with spouses and children including Golda Miller Maey and Barbara Jean of Oxnard and Adeline Miller Kennedy and her sons from San Bernardino. Mrs. Kennedy was elected vice president for the coming year.
For years the paper has urged residents to buy from home businesses to keep money circulating locally. The editors credit prior efforts with benefiting many town shops and still offer advice, hoping Diller merchants will show more appreciation through stronger local advertising patronage.
The Plymouth band schedules a fall picnic for September 20, 21, and 22. The Gage county board of supervisors adjourned their last meeting and will reconvene on Tuesday September 19.
Mrs. John Meyer of four miles north of Diller was called to Beatrice Monday by her mother Mrs. Bauer’s illness and death. John Greider and wife returned from Wood River Nebraska after Julius Packer age 57 former Diller resident died after a months long illness. Services were held at the Presbyterian church and burial was at Wood River cemetery. Obituary next week.
Mr and Mrs Roy Patton attended the Monday funeral in Wymore for Marion Campbell an old schoolmate and neighbor from her girlhood days.
Mr. Charles Davis principal of the Diller schools was out of school Wednesday due to illness. He was taken that evening to Lincoln General hospital by Dr. O. C. Diehl and Supt. Wilbur Schindler.
Dwaine and Hollis Limprecht traveled from Lincoln to visit their uncle and aunt Mr. and Mrs. Willis Clark and other relatives and friends from Saturday through Monday.
Harbine hosts a two day picnic offering good programs. Jansen and Harbine play ball today and Diller and Harbine compete Saturday. Jud Messmore is slated to speak at 2 30 P M Saturday.
Burglars broke into a local hardware store Monday night taking five guns and cash from the register. Entrance came via a back window with broken glass. Gliff Emil Ackman surveyed the scene and recovered the window glass for fingerprinting efforts.
The N R C Picnic at Chautauqua opened with a hot yet pleasant day. Members gathered by the river for Row tables and shade, sharing fried foods cakes pies and salads. The event featured visiting, church talk, and horse bidding, with many present while some members were missed.
Ruth Edna Steffen, born March 16 1896 in Diller Nebraska, daughter of F W Steffen. She taught across Nebraska and Kansas, studied at Peru Normal and Beatrice Business College, aided at Central College Pella Iowa, then worked in the Nebraska State Superintendent's office and later for Woods Bros. Investment Co. in Lincoln for six years.
A retiree connected with the Christian Fellowship and Reformed churches died early Monday. Survived by parents Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Steffen of Diller, and siblings Mrs Elsie Schouelle of Fairbury and three brothers in Diller Bloomfield Iowa and Des Moines. Funeral by Rev Robert C Shupe from Mrs Schovalle’s home in Relebury Wednesday afternoon. burial in Fairbury Cemetery.
