The fire consumed hay, 400 bushels of cats, 150 bushels of corn, 200 bushels of apples and peaches, plus several small outbuildings. Neighbors fought the flames. the house and cow sheds were threatened but saved. Two wells were emptied to fight the fire. insurance covered the barn but not the contents.

Prairie Fires Ravage Northwest Custer County

Over the last week prairie fires caused extensive damage in northwest Custer County. Sparks from a passing engine ignited a blaze near Marvin and Anselmo, driven by a strong south wind across twenty miles of land, destroying hay valleys and farm structures. Another fire between Anselmo and Marvin scorched a twenty five mile strip east and north, wiping out well improved farms and ranch improvements.
