Mrs. Carl Sandmin suffered a broken bone in her left arm above the wrist after a ladder fall while painting in the kitchen at her parents home. E H Jordening drove her to Beatrice where an X ray confirmed the fracture and Dr Wildhaber reduced it.
Youth Fellowship members from Minnesota and Nebraska joined a weekend trip to Lincoln. Gene Cosgrove drove the group’s semi to the game. The Minnesota team routed Nebraska 61 7, then the group visited Beatrice for supper and a show before returning home.
Eleanor Ruth Stahl and John L Forbes Jr. united in a double ring ceremony on October 6, 1945 at Past Chapel McClellan Field California. Attendants Mrs Edward Wechsels wore aqua and gold frocks with orchid corsages. A reception followed at 301 Forrest Street North Sacramento. The couple plan to await discharge from the United States Army Forces.
Mrs Frances Eckwall her baby Dubie Lee and her mother Mrs Gay Spencer plus sister Barbara traveled from Lincoln for an all day visit at the C L Geer home. Eckwall formerly served as music director in Ditler schools and now resides with her mother in Lincoln while Mr Eckwall is in the South Pacific. Mrs Roy Patton joined the group to Diller and visited her daughter Mrs Roy Casper.
I thank all my friends and neighbors for the lovely cards letters flowers and words of cheer during my recent illness. They were all appreciated.
Mrs A A Rick Mre and Avis Yager with niece Ronnie Uppenhauer visited family, returning to Beatrice Saturday. Capt and Mrs Rippeter welcomed Bruce Estes weighing 8 lb 1 oz born Oct 10 in Waterfall New York. Mrs A A Eick is recovering from major surgery. Referendum on organizing a soil conservation district in Jefferson County set for Oct 16. Nancy Robertson suffers a heart attack.
Mrs. Bessie Smith of Cottage Grove Oregon writes that she and her three youngest sons came to spend the winter and attend school. Her mother Mrs. Hayworth plans to live with them. They bought a home near sister Beulah Gorman Nerlie. They canned a large harvest of apples peaches pears cherries berries and plums. Mrs Smith asks to change her address from Black Duck Minnesota to Cottage Grove Oregon in care of Nerlie Disstone Route. Mr and Mrs John Fanders who had their farm sale Monday expect to move to Beatrice after residence property is vacated. Mrs Frances Broadstone Mrs Donald McKinzie and sister in law of Fairbury and Mrs Max Johnson of Beatrice attended the Lincoln football game last Saturday. Mrs Earl Weigel underwent a tonsillectomy at Odell hospital last Thursday.
Doane College welcomed Mrs Wils Mrs Scott Miller Gloria and other visitors for Parents Day. They attended a noon luncheon an evening dinner and the football game with Simpson College. Their daughters Virginia Sandman and Marilyn Miller attend Doane College and joined the Drum Corps which debuted in snappy black and orange uniforms. Marilyn is a snare drummer and may become a featured baton twirler with the group.
Charles Barber was born July 16 1870 in New Sharon Mahaski County Iowa and died October 1 1945. He moved with his parents to a farm near Diller as a boy and married Sarah James in 1899 at her home near Diller Nebraska. They had four children Leslie Delia Ruby and Herbert with Delia and Ruby preceding him in death. The couple celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary on February 27 1940. They moved to town in 1942 after 45 years on the farm. Surviving are his wife Sarah sons Leslie and Herbert of Diller 15 grandchildren 10 great grandchildren two brothers William of Fairbury Lewis of Shea and a sister Daisy Cole of Fairbury. Funeral services were held last Thursday at Congregational church with Rew Pullen officiating. Floyd Hughes of Fairbury and Carolyn Clarx provided music.
Harold Allen writes from Germany about transfer from 204th to 84th Field Artillery with one old buddy still nearby who is dead on arrival. He notes six to ten months remaining and admits preferring to come home. He describes truck duty, boredom in wire duty, a raid at 6 am, deserters and a woman with looted goods, a cinema showing GI Joe by Ernie Pyle, and longing for a juicy steak.
The family of Sadie Barber and D Fanders, with Senior Bros, express sincere appreciation for kindness shown during the illness and death of their husband and father. They note Mrs D Fanders remains gravely ill, and the family was called to Fairbury Wednesday due to the serious illness of their mother and sister.
The Kensington Division of the WACC met at Willis Clark home on Oct 6 with Mrs Ralph Long presiding. Twenty-seven were served as guests Mrs Mae Lowe Steele City and Mrs Archie Trout Los Angeles attended. Missionary division to meet Oct 19 in the Annex led by Mrs Leonard Richardson.
Mr and Mrs Robert Upson received a warm Friday call from their son Dr Robert W Upson and his Wilmington Del wife. Granddaughters sent messages for their grandparents. Mr and Mrs George Hilder of Central City were weekend guests of the Upsons.
Robert D. Thompson a chief metrician's mate in the V S N who had ed in New York recently arrived in Omaha for a visit last Friday. He traveled to Diller with his uncle True and remained to visit his mother Mrs Christie Seaman.
Beatrice residents hosted Sgt Leo Ceerle and family as he received his honorable discharge. Nebraska troops aboard the John Ericson include S Sgt William Gearson. Sgt Frank Gebhard returns after two years overseas to receive discharge in Texas. Cpl Crawford Uplifts listed as coming home, husband of Katherine Johnson, now with her son in Beatrice.
Sunday dinner guests included Mrs Jennie Upson and son Chester along with Mr and Mrs Harold Bowers and their sons Burns Billy Jimmy and George Hartwick visiting Mr and Mrs Pickard. The Bowers attended a Lincoln football game Saturday then stayed with Ruth Pickard before returning to Paxton Nebraska.
The Diller school reports arrival of a movie projector to be used once films arrive. Students delivered speeches on the value of extracurricular activity during Convocation Period led by Camilla Hubka Darlene Novotny Gloria Miller Lynn Thompson Dwaine Green and LeRoy Walker. A freshmen picnic hosted by Mrs Stiera occurred Tuesday evening. Miss Thorngate and Mrs Paverland attended Wednesday afternoon a kitten ball game with boys winning 53 to 1. The boys game against Hollenberg is set for Friday at Hollenberg.
The Neighborly Neighbors Club met at Mrs. Ward Finch's home. Leaders Mie Lynn Fioeh and Mrs Rudolph Hubken demonstrated tandy heat sugar. Guests tasted the treated tandy, complimenting the presentation. Hostess served homemade ice cream cupcakes and coffee. Next meeting at Mrs Lloyd Pefferman's home.
