Gus Dressen is in very poor health and requires constant supervision. Arrangements have been made for Fred Clark to provide day and night care.
Paul Stange received a box mailed by his brother Carl Stange from Nellsville Wisconsin. The box contained Irish potatoes large sweet potatoes radishes and butter beans noting sweet potatoes do not grow there.
Work on the Rock Creek crossing eight miles west of Diller progresses slowly. Concrete abutments for the bridge have been poured and are ready for the bridge. Abutments rise 12 to 14 feet, higher than the old bridge, and the steel girders from the old structure will be reused. Moving the bridge was expected to start yesterday, likely causing a detour over the rough old road for a time.
Doyle L. Buckles hands the Fairbury News editorship to Clyde Moore and takes control of the Alliance Times Herald after purchasing an interest. Under Buckles, the Fairbury paper won a National Editorial Association community service prize two years ago. He has served Fairbury four and a half years.
H J Gramlich state cattle buying director announced after a conference with A Sykes AAA feed buying agent that no Nebraska feed will be purchased for distribution in other states by the federal government. The federal government will cooperate with the state to conserve all available feed for use within its borders.
Burling ton breakman Wm Carico learns his daughter Melva Carico a Filley teacher was injured when her car, driven with two companions Miss Chamberlain and Miss Starlin, collided with a truck two miles north of Filley Nebraska. Starlin treated at Beatrice Lutheran hospital. Chamberlin and Carico treated at Filley. Carico returns home to Wayne. Jurgens family occupants escape unharmed.

A joint committee for Congregational and Methodist congregations arranged a series of Sunday evening union services starting at 7 30. For this month the events will be held at the Congregational church with special recognition of Sunday School work and a program featuring the Sunday School Superintendents, instrumental music, and a young ladies sextette. Rev Mr Drew will speak.
Nebraska State Fair faced a deficit exceeding 5000 with officials seeking a 75000 legislative appropriation to sustain the exposition. Premiums for exhibitors this year were paid promptly while pro rata contracts were only partly settled. President A H Miller noted possible further requests to retire notes from 1982 exhibitors and repay grandstand indebtedness as attendance reached about 35000 in the first five days.
FERA workers were directed to report at noon to Wilson and Company plant in Nebraska City for beef slaughter to aid the needy. By Sunday about 100 head were in the yards with more expected, and the plant has been remodeled by the government. The mode of distribution—canning or freezing—awaits a decision.
Funeral services for Mrs Jesse Pierce 55 who died suddenly last Thursday at her daughter’s home near Bilis were conducted Sunday from the family home in Beatrice. Rev J J Timken officiated. She leaves her husband and four children. The Pierces lived on a farm near Ellis before moving to Beatrice years ago. She was a daughter of the late Robert Weible.
Erwin Lyle C. Erwin of Omaha was indicted by a federal grand jury for sending three extortion letters to Earl E. May of Shenandoah Iowa in a bid to obtain 6000. He was arrested by Iowa state agents and Omaha justice officials after attempting to collect the package on a highway east of Council Bluffs.
The government cattle buying program will be suspended on Saturday October 13 as Agricultural Agent W C Andreas confirms. Local offices will accept up to 60 head per date on October 6 9 and 11 at Daykin Plymouth Diller Reynolds and up to 100 head at Fairbury. Farmers forced to desell more stock are urged to act now as no guarantee of resumption exists. Tuesday's quota rose from 200 to 300 head but further increases for the final days are uncertain.
Democratic U senator candidate Burke and Republican Robert Simmons will debate the New Deal and the Roosevelt administration in a series of ten debates. Debates begin Monday October 8 with two per congressional district, covering Fremont North Platte Scotts Bluff Omaha Norfolk Nebraska City Grand Island Hastings and Omaha again.
Roe Sparks, 16, popular junior at Diller High, was shot in the leg by neighbor Jake Lottman who mistook him for a tramp. The incident followed a sequence of misread motives and fear. Roe survived after treatment by Dr. Diehl, with no serious injuries expected.
An emergency livestock day at the University of Nebraska College of Agriculture on October 12 invites Jefferson County farmers. The event replaces Rooter's Day and highlights maintenance rations for cattle through winter with lectures by college faculty and invited officials. Seven drought cattle will be exhibited as part of an emergency ration experiment to assess feed tankage as a protein supplement and its impact on cows in poor flesh.
