Fire demolishes barn and garage in Diller blaze

A Sunday fire destroyed a two story barn and three car garage belonging to Chas Waggoner in Diller. The blaze damaged a chicken house and a jetty, with property loss estimated around 1500 dollars, insured. The Diller Volunteer Fire Dept tried to save nearby homes and will replace the structure with a smaller garage.

Christmas visit planned for local children event

Santa Claus will visit the community on Thursday evening December 4 as part of a holiday program. Clarence Richardson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Richardson, recently enlisted in the army and is stationed at Fort Leavenworth after completing training at Omaha. Clarence attended Diller High School class of 1943 and worked at Diller State Bank before its closure. he later joined the First National Bank at Paicbury. Frances Broadstone enjoyed Thanksgiving Day with her brother Merrel Johnson, recently discharged from the European theater. Several local families hosted Thanksgiving gatherings including Cpt Harold Lottinan and wife, the Lottmans, Keith Jobson and Kathleen Beatrice, and guests from Beatrice and Lincoln counties.

Obituary notes Harry Burton Close born November 19 1890 in Nebraska City died November 19 1945 at age 55 years 6 months at his home in Diller Nebraska. Youth Fellowship and Thanksgiving Gatherings Report

The Youth Fellowship at Congregational Church held a Sunday evening meeting with 28 attendees including Irma Cookus and Shirley Wather, planning White Christmas gifts and a December 9 gathering. Boys and girls shared a league party Friday at the City bar with games and refreshments as Mary Elizabeth Freitag and Dorothy Scheele won prizes. Thanksgiving at the Michels home drew many relatives from Hartington, Powell, Diller, Daykin, and Beatrice, including Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Michels, Mr. and Mrs. LaVere Michels, and others. Miss Bertha Wenz of Plymouth visited relatives as well.

Mr and Mrs Fred Diekhoff of Beatrice and Elville Schipper with daughter Dorothy were supper guests of Mrs Henry Hullman and Edna on Sunday. Elville and daughter joined the Diekhoffs for the trip to Beatrice. Mr and Mrs James Haye with Dick and Audrey traveled to Fairbury on Saturday evening to visit their niece Garnet Birber at D Lynch hospital.

Former Diller Boy to Work as Janse o Bank Cashier

Capt. Allen L. Tinstman has returned from 37 months in the Southwest Pacific as a member of the 43rd Division. He sailed from Frisco on October 1, 1942 and served in Guadalcanal Northern New Guinea Philippines and Japan occupation. He visits Lincoln mother Mrs C L Tinstman and brother Capt Dale Tinstman and will become cashier at State Bank of Janseo January 1.

Diller School News Highlights Schedule and Games

Phyllis Bernhart reports a film screening of Grapes of Wrath and a future showing School in the Ogike. The first basketball game saw the first team lose 44 to 16 while the second team won. An invitational tournament unfolds at Wy more next week with Diller facing Odell on the opening night. Home game vs Endicott set for Friday and a Plymouth trip next Tuesday.
