Burlington crew began remodeling the historic Diller depot reducing the second story and a 16 foot western addition. The building will become a bungalow style structure, more compact and easier to heat. The change aims to improve storage efficiency and curb future property losses while keeping residents satisfied with the updated landmark.
The 4H Clubs of Jefferson County prepare an Achievement Meeting on Saturday evening November 20 at the American Legion Hall Fairbury to honor members with completed projects. Ivan Riley will give the welcome Richard Steffen of Diller will respond Ernest J Leonard chairs the 4H Club Committee with 150 attendees expected. Stores Close The following stores will be closed Thanksgiving Day all day. Beginning December 1 we will be closed on Wednesday evenings to save fuel and lights. Earl Weigel schedules a public sale of farm property and equipment for Thursday December 2 as he prepares to move his family to town to run the Skelly service station. Pvt Arnold Lottman calls from Camp Adair Oregon to his wife spending the weekend with Mr and Mrs Orlo Geer. He celebrates his birthday at 4 am with greetings from home and hopes for a furlough around Christmas or New Years. He says he is well and eager to come home.
Albert Sasse returned home from Savanosh last Friday. On his birthday Saturday he received two telephone calls from Elmer at Ft Benj Harrison Indiana and Alfred at San Antonio Texas. Pfc Ray Renz of Camp Rob erts California spent a 15 day furlough visiting family. Beatrice visit included his aunt and uncle Mr and Mrs Paul Renz. First Class signalman and Mrs Robert Patton and their young daughter left by train Sunday to return to New York City.

Harold and Kay Fasnacht write from Navy life about skeet shooting high wages and rent in Florida. They note warm weather flowers and a 55 degree chill at night and compare costs to California. Harold studies for first class ratings, hopes to advance, and mentions his wife’s job and wages. Fred Clark travels to Long Beach to visit relatives.

Family and friends gathered at Mr. and Mrs. James Hays home to honor James Jr. before his Friday departure for Navy training in Farragut Idaho. Attendees included relatives from Beatrice Diller Blue Springs Wymore and Harbine with gifts presented to the departing pioneer.
Mrs Sarah Warthen enjoyed a birthday celebration on Sunday November 14 in fair health. A flood of birthday cards and gifts arrived from friends and relatives at home and abroad. Her son Charles and wife traveled from Formosa Kansas to join the family gathering. A number of friends visited Sunday evening bearing tokens of esteem before departing.
