Unreasonable Refusal and Death Reported in Steele City

In Leavenworth Indiana Thos S Austin refused doctors surgery for his wife claiming an electric treatment cured her after five physicians failed. Geo W Gantt died at 65 of apoplexy after a few days illness on his 20 acre Steele City area farm. He came to Nebraska in 1869 with brother D T Gantt who arrived from Crete to claim the remains and bury him.

Quiet Election Highlights Local Treasurer Contest

Diller voters kept the election orderly with the treasurer race drawing notable interest as Republicans bypassed their candidate while about forty Democrats supported him. Turnout ran about ninety fewer votes than the precinct total, with precinct figures and state and county results to follow in the official county canvas. J D Kennedy and Ann Kennedy secured the contract to build Peter Gill's new barn on Rock Creek and began work Tuesday.

Prairie Gem and vicinity reports Logan and Co shelled over seven hundred bushels of corn for John Novotny who hauled part to Shea. The sale at Win Nida’s residence drew strong bidding. Floyd Monasmith visited Fairbury. J G Frieuwen of Jason, agent for Seelye’s Preparations, canvassed the area. No delegates attended the Agriculture Domestic Science meeting in Fairbury due to Tate’s announcement. Mrs. Chas Monasmith suffers a severe tonsillitis attack.

Local School Box Social Planned Near Diller

Miss Eifie Diller and Miss Violet Musser will host a box social Friday evening November 17 at the Waggoner school house three miles north of Diller. Boxes sell for 50 cents, and all are invited. Pineules are advertised as a treatment for bladder and kidney diseases with relief from a single dose and cure from a bottle sold at Neeley’s Pharmacy.

B. and M. Still Withholding Jefferson County Taxes

Fairbury News reports the B. and M. railroad company paid 6331.27 of 10956.45 assessed taxes for 1904, withholding 4625.18 pending court order. The dispute echoes last year as Rock Island and Grand Island railroads paid in full without protest.

School Notes and Activities At Local Grammar School

The grammar room reports that Florace Green, Henry Fouts, Rex Green, Rue Green, Sylvia Miller, Maude Tonnemaker, Belle Sparks, Ethel Zook, Elna Clark and Creda Wright were neither absent nor tardy last month. The literary club elected Harrison Line president Curtis Geer vice president Elina Clark Lee Henry Fouts treasurer and Belle Sparks organist for two weeks. A well attended box supper raised 25 40 with Mr Wright auctioning the boxes. High School pupils were examined last week and the advertisement promotes Dr Dade’s Little Liver Pills sold at Neely’s Pharmacy.

Epworth League Entertainment Course Schedule

The Epworth League presents five public entertainments from November to April. Events include Under a Hat by Charles M. Shepherd, a December 15 concert, N. K. Griggs Evening of Song and Story on January 19, The Boy Problem with Dr. Chas. F. Fordyce on February 16, and a Silver Medal Declamatory Contest on April 6.
