The Diller Public Schools end the 1936 37 term next Wednesday with a picnic and track meet after baccalaureate services at the Congregational church and commencement at the opera house. The term has been successful overall and programs for the events appear elsewhere in this issue.
Allie Eick finished planting corn Friday evening and prepared the seed box for morning. The next day the planter rattled like it was empty and he suspects someone may have taken seed to finish up. The box was said to hold enough corn to plant an acre.
Mrs Pickard has received several P Q e cards from her son William Bowers aboard an American destroyer on a foreign cruise. Cards mention Bermuda Maine Africa and Spain waters and note a touch at Leghorn Italy as the voyage proceeds.
All band members are requested to attend rehearsal next Monday night. The group will perform Decoration Day and introduce new music, with only a few members deemed ready to sit in without practice. The program details appear in another column.
The Green Room Cafe was repainted last week with a light green coat giving it an all dolled up look. The change may honor a bride who holds a half interest in the establishment.
Rex Green and family visited Lincoln last Saturday for the state track meet. Their daughter Mrs. Eileen Gore and her husband also attended, returning home with the Greens for a visit. Mr. Gore arrived later.
Diller's free film series opened Tuesday night at the park drawing a crowd. No show next Tuesday due to commencement exercises, but weekly screenings resume on subsequent Tuesdays.
Mavis Holle shows progress in roller skating despite a rough start. A friend asked how she was learning, and she replied she has fallen four times while practicing in a small car.
John Pulec expands his blacksmith shop with a Wilco Electric welding outfit enabling him to perform any kind of welding work.
Mr. W. E. Lea of Fairbury underwent an operation at Clarkston hospital in Omaha this week. He is reported to be getting along nicely.
Oscar Amos Will Amos and wife Frank Grabber and family joined other Amoses at Ellis for a weekend family reunion held last Sunday with relatives present.
Mrs. Sarah Hughes undertakes a new shingle roof on her residence in the north part of town, aiming to improve curb appeal and protection from the elements.
Commissioner Deffer was reported to be very ill at the start of the week, with word spreading of his health condition and uncertainties about his schedule and duties.
After school ends, talk with Mr. Ingalsbee about arranging piano lessons. The note directs students to seek him for next steps and scheduling.
Francis Clark and family and Miss Elsie Franzen traveled to Atchison Kansas on Sunday for health and a bit of business. They met a friend, the mayor, who invited them to his home for dinner. They toured the town including parks and reported a pleasant time.
Miss Margaret Chambers and her father James Chambers visited on Monday. They brought Boss Wright from Fairbury who had stayed at their home. Miss Chambers showed interest in the Orphans Home project and the wrecking of the hotel, planning a story for next Sunday’s Omaha Bee.
Rev. Klinger who became pastor in 1900 has resigned his pastorate after 37 years of service at Zion Lutheran church Hanover and will leave the pulpit this month. A reception was held in his honor last Sunday. He and Mrs. Klinger will tour to California and may settle there as their future home.
Town remained unusually quiet as the senior class left for an educational day trip. A few seniors spoke on the street microphone but no legislative newcomers appeared to be introduced.
Mrs Gladys McGrath wife of a Grand Island physician and a niece of Mrs Cavett was reported to be seriously ill at a Grand Island hospital early this week Her mother Mrs Sadie Diller of Scottsbluff is at Grand Island.
Mrs Henry Arntt was moved to St Bernard Sanitarium in Council Bluffs last week for care. Her husband and relatives visited Sunday, and she is reported to be improving.
Mr. A. D. Ackerman of Fairbury was reported to be very ill with a heart attack on Tuesday.
Local gardeners report an unusually strong wild oat yield in the east part of town. Farmworkers note thriving conditions and rising seed gatherers activity as oats spread along roadside margins.
A Farmer's Store event drew crowds guessing how many egg shells fill a 50 pound bag. Top guesser John Miller put 400860 eggs, others varied from 3600 to 150000. The manufacturer’s figure: 4504 shells, about 90 per pound.
The D. H. S. Class of 29 held a reunion on Sunday May 16 at Ray Larkin’s home four miles west of town. They retrieved a vigil box buried in the Larkin yard and buried another box to mark the occasion. A picnic supper followed at Fairbury City Park with attendees Mr and Mrs Richard Mayborn, Mr and Mrs Ray Larkin, Erma Sible, Mr and Mrs Dean Barber, Mr and Mrs Bertie Kite, Lyon Cooper and Isabelle Farhenwaldt, and Mrs Herman Stab.
Albert Ballard aged 76 died at his home eight miles south of Beatrice last Saturday. Funeral services were held at Centenary Methodist Church Beatrice Tuesday with Rev F F Travis officiating. Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery Beatrice. He leaves his widow a daughter Mrs Lamb and two sons. The Ballard family had lived in Gage county for 25 years.
Mr and Mrs John Carico visit their son Wm Carico and family six blocks south of the capitol. They see old friend Wm Fenton former warden of Nebraska state penitentiary who has been ill but is now able to sit at the table. Then Caricos return home Tuesday.
G M Porter of the Nebraska Children’s Home Society visited Omaha on Monday to gather community benevolences. He reported a waiting list of over 100 people who wish to adopt, noting one uninhabited institution at present.
Miss Pauline Patton and Roy Casper were married at 5 P M on Friday May 14 in Washington Kansas at the Methodist Parsonage. Rev J H Hoppingarner officiated in the presence of friends including Ervin Faunders. The bride and groom attended Diller School with the bride a 1933 graduate. They will live with the Pattons until June then with the Kellys while away for the summer. A wedding dinner was held at the Patton home last Sunday with family and friends in attendance. The newlyweds enjoyed a large celebratory charivari Monday evening.
Beatrice and Jefferson County groups organize camping programs at the Little Blue River site southeast of Fairbury. Wm Leask oversees the county Y M C A with Dick Miller coordinating this season. June activities include Old Campers Reunion Boy Camp Girl Camp and short camps with Young Men and Girls sessions scheduled through late June and July.
Last Friday morning observers debated frost presence as thermometers edged near freezing. Some gardens showed damaged, blackened plants while other areas showed no freezing signs, indicating readings hovered around the frost threshold.
Bert Greenwood traveled from Steele City Friday afternoon to purchase two oak boards for a new trailer box. Steele City buyers appeared to grab the remaining boards offered.
Sons and daughters of veterans lead the Decoration Day observance in Diller with graves in Prairie Home cemetery to be decorated at 1 30 pm on Sunday May 30. An afternoon program in the opera house features bands, Congregational singing, an address by Rev S Green and a ceremony honoring a Gold Star Mother.
Grasshoppers are increasing in number across fences rows pastures and fields. Early tiny nymphs show little damage but as they mature they threaten crops. Precinct meetings to discuss control will be held soon with poison bran bait used carefully in morning hours.
